It can be done - i've done it.

 

I had a 3 axis VMC with a 4th axis (standard setup - around X) 

 

I turned the axis on it's ass - had the chuck vertical - had the axis rotate around Z

 

Had the Y locked and everything done via polar co ords because part was out of machine limits in Y

(Machined everything CCW to avoid b/lash) 

 

I was machining 18" dia parts with a Y axis of 14"  

 

Needed a custom post though (got one, but it's Siemens 810).

 

I had the boys at Indiecam (UK) sort me out a post. Stuart at indiecam is the best post writer i've ever met, no nepotism. 

 

I'm aware that vertical turn/mill will allow you to 4th axis rotary as a 3D finish option, but it will set the tool perpendicular to the surface - pointless for your application.  

 

I guess i'm confirming it's a custom post you need.

 

That said, if anybody can sort J's problem by features alone................speak up!
