2d adaptive slotting starting outside of part

Semi-new to cam still. I was going over nyc cnc slotting tutorial where he tries to run an adaptive as a slotting strategy. They way I modeled the part and set the stock the endmill helix into the part. I couldn't get it to start outside the part and then I figured it out. I confined it not to with the geometry selection.  In my second part I sketched out a little area for the part to start outside and it worked nicely. Is this a reasonable idea or strategy and are sketches used often  or rarely in cam toolpaths?

Hi,

Why do you want to slotting around the part?

Thanks,

Jacob

I just do a random tutorial each day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SusSMezMUw

I think my solution is fine, but I was curious if that is true and if sketches are used frequently with cam programing paths. You don't see a ton of tutorials using sketches.

Hi @sendithard ,

Sometimes I use that trick when determining the machining boundary in adaptive roughing operations when I need to avoid and specific face or region of the part.

Here you can see an example:

Kind regards.
