I am setting up my cnc router to carve out a canoe paddle blade. I am getting a stepping in the profile of the final product which I would prefer to get rid of all together (to reduce belt sanding needs).
1) Should I be able to get rid of this stepping and have a smoother profile?
2) Is the size of this stepping being determined by the Tolerance setting (.004) in the Adaptive Clearing operations (Passes tab)?

Adaptive will always leave such a surface. It's intended to be a roughing strategy, and it does that quite well. What you can do is follow it up with a Parallel of Scallop finishing toolpath. Setting your stepover at a small (10% diameter) will give you a really decent finish

Is that a 2d adaptive or 3d adaptive? However as the other response states it is a roughing strategy. If you would like less post work using a second path such as a scallop or a parallel with a ball end mill and small step over instead of a standard end mill you will likely eliminate these steps.
