2D Adaptive Clearing - Stepover / Chipload not maintained - Full Width Cuts

There were no error messages. I selected open profile for the 2D adaptive clearing toolpath, the stock is defined as a solid body and the part is defined as a solid body. The stepover for the 0.5" cutter was set at 10% width and 0.5" depth or axial cut.

 

I program at high feedrates because I am counting on the stepover being consistent and maintained. In this case there were some full width cuts and this almost stopped the spindle on my machine. Luckily I was standing at the control.

Please look operation "2D Adaptive Issue Toolpath" under "Setup4".

I'm assuming that you are looking at Setup4 > T5 2D Adaptive?

 

The reason it took as much as it did is becuase you likely just selected the face of the part. When you do that, it includes the holes that are there in it's calculations. If they aren't machined yet, well, it doesn't go so well....

Rather, select this inside edge:

I used to work as a CAM Applications Engineer for another company and I believe this is a bug and wanted to bring it to the attention of support and the community for feedback.

 

I have remade the toolpath in 3D adaptive and it looks much better. See below.

I don't believe it's a bug. Is it possible you did accidentally select the face?

I see the dive into full tool engagement near the end of the toolpath and have logged a ticket with the CAM development team on this behavior (internal reference CAM-12865). Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

 

I was able to use some sketch geometry for a machining boundary and a 3D Adaptive toolpath to give an option that will maintain the proper cutting load throughout the cut. This is shown in the attached file- I broke the link to the referenced component to get a local export copy. Files with referenced components can be shared with the public link.

 

I also found that the 3D Adaptive toolpath would sometimes show an "empty toolpath" warning unexpectedly, but would generate after another regeneration (CTRL+G or right click > generate toolpath). I've logged another internal ticket on this issue as well (CAM-12866)

EDIT: This thread blew up while I was investigating! Nice work on the workarounds - I still believe this is could be improved upon, as neither selection should give results with inconsistent tool loading.

Quick update on the side issue with 3D Adaptive regeneration - unchecking the "Use Distributed CAM" option in the Task Manager > Right Click menu will allow the toolpaths to generate first try.

I would like to add that I have not had this issue prior with the 2D adaptive toolpath and that was the reason I felt it was a bug and wanted to submit or share it. 

 

I have used about 8 different CAM systems and have supported customers with as many as 5 CAM systems at their facility. They love the Fusion 360 adaptive toolpaths so much that they told me that they use it for all of their roughing even if they use a different CAM systems for other operations. This speaks volumes and as far as I know the Fusion adaptive roughing is the best in the industry as an included toolpath operation. I know there are add-ins like volumill but this is the best included roughing strategy. Some of the systems I am comparing to cost as much as $15,000 - $25,000 per seat.
