How to create a channel/slot that follows the outline of an existing trace?

Hello,

I am new to Fusion 360, which I am looking to use/learn to use with my hobby CNC machine. So far, I have done the fusion 360 introduction tutorials and created a waste board.

Now, I am looking to make a dust shoe. I have created a trace, with two holes; one for the router and one for the dust collector hose. I also want to make a channel/slot that is 10 mm from the edge of the design that goes all the way around following the outside edge in a complete circle/path. I would like this channel/slot to be 10 mm offset from the edge and as wide as my router bit (6.35 mm) and 5 mm deep. I am not sure how to do this, I have tried searching google but can not find my answer. I have attached my design. Any guidance/advice or links to an appropriate tutorial would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

-Michael

Probably a simple contour will be the easiest and best way to make your slot, see the attached file for a quick example of a contour that is 13.175mm from the existing shape so that`s your 10mm plus the radius of your cutter, I think Smiley Happy

Anyway, try it out and if it isn`t exactly what you want then it can easily be changed, right now it is a single depth of cut but can be set to do steps down if one full depth cut is too much for the machine Smiley Happy

In your sketch use Offset to create your slot. In the attached model I extruded your material to 15mm and created a slot with some example cut paths. Hope this helps.

Engineguy,

Thank-you for your reply. I took a look at your file and though the advice on using contour in CAM context is helpful, I was curious as to how to make the required edit within the Model context. I have figured this out using Offset via the reply from randyT9V9C.

Cheers,

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for. I have modified my original file using Offset in order to obtain the same results!

I have another question; I now want to add a line/cut the width of my bit (6.35mm) from the smaller circle to the corner of the entire design. This would let me thread a screw from 1 side of the dust shoe to the other and tighten the dust shoe onto the router. Would the best approach for accomplishing this be to use a rectangle trace on an angle and then trim?
