Setting up weird Work Coordinate System

Hi guys -

I use Fusion 360 CAD/CAM with a 2005 Fadal VMC. So here's the deal. Since I got the machine, I've machined parts in a vice. To set X/Y on my machine I use a Haimer 3D Sensor to set X0 and Y0, and for Z I touch my tools off on top of my stock using a piece of paper. Old school I know, but this mill doesn't have the 20k gauge the 2013 Haas I had at uni did. Anyway, I've set my WCS XYZ0 to the corner of my stock and the *top* of my stock and I've been set.

However, I just machined a fixture plate. Great, now I can do part flips. The only problem is setting the WCS. I need my X0 and Y0 to be set to the notch I machined on my fixture plate. But Z0 still needs to be the top of my stock, I think. I'm having trouble doing this in Fusion. I select the top of my stock as my Z0 and then Y and X, but I get the WCS at the point of the notch on my fixture plate. What I think I need is my WCS floating in the air above where it is pictured, at Z0, but X an Y0 are at the notch in my fixture plate.

  • Does this make sense, and how can I get fusion to do this?
  • Alternatively, could I just touch my tools off on the top of my fixture plate instead of the top of my stock?

To have the XY corner as your fixture plate and the Z zero as the top, here's what you need to do:

Create a sketch on the top of your part

Draw a point at the corner of the fixture plate, but at the height of your part

Select that point in your "Setup".

And yes, you certainly can set the Z zero as top of your Fixture plate, but seriously; do yourself a favor: Choose a spot and stick with it. If you are constantly changing that Z zero point, one day, it will bite you in the backside. Nothing like watching a shell mill shear right off.....

I was wondering if F360 CAM could do that. That is a very useful technique. In fact, in an upcoming mold making project this technique will be very helpful going forward.
I will need to modify the existing mold in the future, possibly fill and remove material to reuse the mold. I was wondering how to do this. This approach will work really well. Thank you!

Thanks! Will definitely stick with setting it at the top of my fixture plate. That worked today.
