Threaded Holes

Just wanted to post some comments about threaded holes in Fusion and their impact on Fusion CAM.

The way I see threaded holes being modeled is the hole is created and then threads are applied.  A thread depth can be specified, however the entire cylinder is treated as one hole.

 

In SW/HSMWorks you can have the holes modeled as a counter drilled hole.  This provides you with 2 different cylinders to select from.  You can select the lower drill hole segment and use merge segments to drill.  You can then select the upper poriton which is the tap size and this can control the tap or thread mill depth.  If you need to tap deeper you can use the through bottom and specify an amout to tap deeper to account for the lead of the tap.  If you edit the operation it is easy to see the dimension in the through depth to know how much you are over tapping but.

 

The second issue is for one there are no NPT threaded hole.  I have seen this in the idea station so I am sure it has already bee brought up.  However I looked at the pipe threads that are available and the all appear to just model a straight hole and not tappered.  Again in the SW/HSMWorks program you can model the NPT threads as a counterbore that has the proper taper and diameters of the NPT major diameter.  This allows you to thread mill the NPT thread with a single point thread mill or a multi-tooth.  When tread milling a tappered thread the tool needs to start at the bottom and increase the diameter as it moves up the hole.

 

Is there a work around in Fusion for NPT threads?  Anyone milling NPT threads in Fusion?

Hi lonniecady,

 

I can answer two of your questions related to modeling in Fusion.  There are other CAM experts that can help you with any CAM-specific questions.

 

First, yes, Fusion does support counterbore and countersunk holes:

Threads can be applied to either cylinder.  In this case, I chose the lower cylinder:

For now, we have implemented threads and holes as separate features.  We have discussed combining them, but for now our short-term plan is to keep them separate.

 

For your second question, regarding NPT threads:  No, unfortuately, today we do not support NPT threads.  It is certainly on our list to support in the future, but we have not yet gotten around to it.

Thanks for the response.  I realize NPT are supported yet and have voted for it in the idea station :slightly_smiling_face: .  However it was more to point out that even the BSP threads you do support don't provide a taperd hole to drive the thread mill.  However I am not sure if the are supposed to be BSPP or BSPT since is just says BSP pipe threads.

 

Just wanted to bring it to someones attention when it is NPT are implemented some other considerations from the CAM side.

This may be somewhat pedantic, but I think there should be a threaded hole type in addition to what exists currently.  I know you can make a counterbore and then apply threads to the lower portion, but then it's not really a counterbore.  There should also be an option for a near side or far side countersink.  Being able to individually select the hole bottom, threaded face, and top side chamfer really does make things easier when programming for machining operations.

That is what I was getting at, makes the software more intuitive.  Want to chamfer? then click the chamfer face.  Want to drill for tap? select the drilled portion of the hole.  Want to tap the hole?  select the thread face of the hole.
