help w/reverse engineering a part
I am trying to get my CNC machine to cut violin parts. I have done this the old world way for 20 years with chisels, gouges, hand planes etc. Arthritis is getting the best of me and I need help from technology.
If I hand carve the part would the CNC machine work better with a .step file or .stl file? Also will fusion 360 convert a .step file to "G-code"?

I'd like to help a bit, I'm sure many would, here in this forum, but I don't exactly think I understand what you are asking.
A CNC machine does not work with STEP or STL, I mean, my boss is saying for 20 years that it should, we should just put the solid model file in the machine and it should simply make it... but we are not quite there yet (good for me, but my boss hates that lol). So for that part of your question, I think your question is not really clear.
Fusion will create g-code for your machine, but not by converting the model to g-code automatically. It is not that simple... is that what you were asking, if you could put the model in Fusion, and see Fusion spit out the g-code for you?
I'm sorry if you think I'm joking, I'm not, I have no idea what level you are at, but it seems that you are looking at a CNC for the 1st time, is that correct? If so, I cannot help, it is too involved, there is way too many things to explain (I do hope that some others can guide you better than I can in this case). You can look at youtube probably on how to get started.
If you are familiar with CNC machines, could you write your questions in a different way? It's just unclear to me (maybe to others too) what you are after.
