I have seen this a lot lately once a model starts to get many fabrication parts. Most the time for us once you click the "checkout" button Revit will crash. I found that if I go to the worksets within the Collaborate tab and make everything editable (Which will check everything out) then try to reload configuration and hit the "Checkout" all works as planned. Let me know if that works for you.
