Are the couplings created with one of the following patterns:
If so, you should be able to set this up based on connectivity. The pipes should be unable to connect to each other. When they are unable to connect, the button palette is searched for one of the above patterns to insert between them which will make the connection. If you set up a coupling that can connect properly between two pipes when the pipes themselves are unable to connect to each other, it will automatically be inserted.
