I don't think I completely follow the process you are trying to do, but I am wondering if the problem isn't during the copy to clipboard. Instead of selecting a single object, make sure you are using the green crossing window on the edge of the viewport to grab all objects. Viewports created from polylines never actually consume to polyline and it often exists as the top level object.
