Materials with bump map artifacts

I've noticed artifacts with a material that I created based on wood planks. As shown in the screencast below, the planar face with a hole will exhibit diagonal lines with the material with a bump map but not with the material map alone.

The bump map was created by duplicating the original material maps then editing the contrast and brightness to enhance the plank joints and retain a bit of the wood grain. Material maps attached.

Hi Luc,

Not sure your screenshot came through, but I suspect the issue is that the "bump map" you attached isn't using typical bump map color channels.

For example, you can see what a typical bump map looks like from the Autodesk Material Library:

ShaderMap is a great free tool to generate bump maps from the original texture. It'll create the bump maps with the correct color channels, and you can control how "deep" the bumps go. When you export, it's recommended you keep using JPG files for the bump map. I think ShaderMap will default to PNG, so heads up.

Hope this helps!

Josh,

I will definitely give ShaderMap a try (when our anti-virus software lets me install it!) and get back to you.

My confusion comes from not knowing the difference between bump (grayscale) and displacement maps (RGB)

It comes from having hair the color of bump maps (salt+pepper) and not being up to date with all the new kids 21st century  lingo 🙂

Thanks,

Luc
