Our firm is currently using Formit on a campus masterplan, but only in a very limited capacity.  The only reason we are using it is that it can quickly give us gross external area figures by combining a mass model with levels. This allows us to explore many massing options and understand GEA impacts.

SketchUp can't do this and Revit is too awkward for us at the very early stages.  One of the main things stopping us from using Formit more often is that it's too cumbersome to hide/isolate objects.  The layer system is kills our workflow when exploring masses.  However, for very rough early masses, the floor levels are a pretty good feature.

Is anybody else using Formit in a serious way for commercial work?  Ideally I'd like to hear about large-scale work, teams and workflows with other programs.  I'm only asking because I've been unable to find examples of this online.  Most information has been tutorials or ad-pieces.

That being said any success stories would be good.  No need to be specific on the firm or project unless you want too.  I can't share what I'm working on or for whom.

I've worked in two different architecture firms, that both specialize in large-scale buildings. In each firm, Formit couldn't gain traction with the designers, because the designers were too used to using SketchUp. Both firms ended up ending their software licenses, even though Revit was the primary arch software used in both offices.

In my experience, there is definitely a demand for a Sketch tool like Formit in a lot of practices. The proof is that a lot of offices use sketchup in one way or another.

But as it stands there are a few bottlenecks that prevent us from switching most of our workflows over from Sketchup to Formit.

Performance is a big one (sketchup handles detailed models a lot better).

Another one is that the Revit->Sketchup->Revit workflow is arguably a bit better then the Revit->Formit->Revit (this depends on your exact workflow but for us this is true).

I don't really have any issues with how the layering system works in Formit to be honest. It works pretty much the same as Sketchup, which has always worked well for us.

I know this thread is from four years ago, but I am just getting into Formit. I am proficient with SketchUp, but I don't like the fact that I have to model the project again in Revit. I am curious about your "Revit->Formit->Revit" workflow. Can you elaborate on that?

Thank you
