I have an issue with grouped objects that are behind other objects showing through to the front in views. I want the non hidden parts of the object to show. Do I have a settings issue and is there a solution?

Hi Debbie,

The image you attached shows up very small for me, so it's hard to know for sure, but perhaps Hidden Edges are enabled in the Visual Styles panel? (sunglasses icon on the right, then the edges tab on the top; or shortcut DH):

If it's checked, try unchecking it.

Otherwise, maybe you can post a higher-res image that shows more of the issue, or we can take a look at the file directly.

Thanks Josh. I have tried that without success.

I have even separated off the 2 groups (i.e. a 50mm air gap) and the roof line profile still shows through. I can zoom in and the unwanted lines disappear but that isn't the view I want to export.

I will attach a few higher res images (max that FormIt exports) and if that doesn't help I will upload the file.

NOTE I am using FormIt Pro on a 64 bit Windows 10 laptop with dedicated graphics only (no GPU). Usually file for the small files I work with.

Thanks, those images helped clarify. I'm not sure what's causing that, so we'd love to investigate the file itself. I'll reach out via private message.

Hi again Debbie,

Posting an update here in case it helps others who run into this:

The file you sent has geometry that is about 34,000 units away from the origin. You may not have known the geometry was there, since your primary object is near the origin. The far-away geometry appears to be a series of 2D edges, perhaps from a DWG file?

Either way, having geometry so far away in the model can cause issues like what you're seeing, as well as others. Fundamentally, any 3D canvas like FormIt's uses a ton of mathematics to accurately draw your 3D geometry on your 2D screen, and the math becomes skewed when objects are far (over ~10,000 metric units) from the origin.

In this case, edges that should have been occluded (not visible) are very close to the surface that should be hiding them. So close that, when combined with the far-away geometry, the resulting math says they're basically touching, so FormIt draws them as such.

An easy fix for this is to:

  • Ctrl + A to select everything, and ensure all Layers are turned on so no geometry is left behind
  • Zoom out and orient the camera so you can see only the geometry you care about
  • Hold shift, then click and drag a selection window covering the important geometry
    • The important geometry should then deselect, and you should now have only the far-away geometry selected (you'll know if you still have something selected, because your cursor will show the Move icon)
  • Hit Delete to eliminate the problematic geometry

Your entire model should now be well within the dimensional bounds FormIt was designed for, and you shouldn't see this issue anymore.

I'll DM you the fixed file as well.
