heating and cooling loads

Hi,

I'm evaluating the results of the energy analysis with revit but i would like to ask some questions i can't answer, and they concern both the heating / cooling loads and energy analysis in Insight.

- About heating and cooling loads:

1. in the general settings i need to choose a type of plant, while in detailed settings I can choose 'building' as plant type, how does the software treat this kind of mismatch?

- About Insight:

1. I tried to evaluate the energy consumption for a very light mass construction ( from ASHRAE BESTEST) and the simulation failed, is there any possibility thet it will work if I change the resolution or something like that?

2. The monthly loads for cooling and heating are in MJ per month right? how 's the set point chosen? and how can I delete the hot water production? ( I tried to set 0 people per area but it doesn't always work)

3. I need to calculate the annual energy needs for cooling and heating so there must be with no plants, is there a chance to set this type of analysis? because i tried with 'no heating and cooling' but it's just no regulation of the inside temperature.

hope somebody will help me with this

thanks in advance

Vittoria

Hi @Anonymous

See my answers in italics:

Insight will use only the HVAC systems in the Energy Settings dialog window (see attached screenshot).

- About Insight:

  1. I tried to evaluate the energy consumption for a very light mass construction ( from ASHRAE BESTEST) and the simulation failed, is there any possibility thet it will work if I change the resolution or something like that?

What are the simulation failure messages you are getting?

  1. The monthly loads for cooling and heating are in MJ per month right? how 's the set point chosen? and how can I delete the hot water production? ( I tried to set 0 people per area but it doesn't always work)

If you are looking at the Insight Heating and Cooling loads report (in the Insight tab choose “Heating Cooling”) the units are Btu/h.

If you are looking at the loads in the Insight model view the IP load units are kBtu/h and the SI load units are kW.

Setting the number of people to 0 in the spaces will eliminate the domestic hot water, but you must choose the “Space” export category in the Insight Energy Settings otherwise your Space settings in Revit will not be used in the Insight Analysis (Energy Settings>Advanced>Other Options>Room/Space Data

  1. I need to calculate the annual energy needs for cooling and heating so there must be with no plants, is there a chance to set this type of analysis? because i tried with 'no heating and cooling' but it's just no regulation of the inside temperature. The Insight heating and cooling loads do not use the plant information for the calculations.

Maybe this forum post will answer your question: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/insight-energy-forum/doubt-using-gbs/m-p/6368163

thank you very much for your kind reply, I actually understood my error in the simulation. I just have to fix another problem: the room I need the simulation for has a 12 sqrm window with certain characteristics I set, when I open the project in GBS, in the section 'Building assumptions' I find the glass characteristics I set but also a 12 sqrm wall with some layers and resistance I never set, I don't know I what i did wrong

Hi @Anonymous,

What you are seeing is a quirk of Insight. The windows in your Revit model have to be hosted by walls. For some reason the properties of those walls use the Insight default and not what you may have specified in your model. The good news is that because these walls are covered by the windows the wall thermal properties will have no impact on your simulation results.
