why does FlexSim freeze my computer when the file gets to a certain point?

[ FlexSim 19.0.0 ]

When I'm creating this production line in FlexSim, I go to put in a robot and suddenly my computer freezes and starts running really slow. It's not just FlexSim, it's my entire computer. Is there a certain reason for this that I could fix? Does anyone has any solutions for this?

Hi @Madeline Z,

I'm guessing if you were to open Windows task manager at that time to view your PC's resource utilization, you would find that FlexSim is using 100% of your CPU (or 50% for a dual-core computer, or 25% on a quad-core computer, etc).

Does FlexSim's simulation clock continue to run and the simulation continue, albeit slowly? Or does the simulation freeze?

It may just be related to your model, its data, the way the model was built, possible lookups going on in the simulation, etc. You may just have a very complex model with a lot going on. If that is the case, there may be ways to simplify the model, or to approach the problem in a different, more efficient way.

On the other hand, there could be some sort of error in your model that causes an infinite loop or other issue that freezes your model and maxes out your PC's CPU.

Without the model file we can only guess. If you can share your model file by attaching it to your post, please do so. We would be able to give you more specific help. If you can't share it publicly, you could create a new, private question to attach your model to. Private questions, along with their attachments, answers, etc, are visible only to FlexSim US.

If the model can't be shared, you could also check out some common steps to solving model freezing issues, here:

@Ben Wilson I'm not running a simulation, I'm just adding pieces of my production line into the line and when I go to put in a robot, FlexSim and my computer freezes and I can't do anything except wait until my computer can get FlexSim shut down.

@Madeline Z, interesting. Sorry I missed that about simply dropping in a robot causing the issue.

Do you have any other weird things that happen when building a model? For instance, what happens when you pull out a conveyor? When you start a new model and the unit-choosing window comes up, is the operator walking? Or arms out T style?

This is the private question I posted with my flexsim file. Everything works fine in my model and I even had an operator move the boxes. When I removed the operator and put in a robot, that's when my computer froze.

@Madeline Z, that was actually a public question. I've downloaded your model and deleted the question.

Hi @Madeline Z, I've just opened your model and dropped a robot in. It worked fine. I tried dropping the robot onto the grid, and also onto the plane. It worked in both cases without any problems. (BTW, you can select the box for "No Select" in the plane's properties to make it so it can't be selected and you can just use it as the floor, if that is its purpose.)

I think your problem is something to do with your graphics hardware or settings.

Can you respond to my questions regarding what happens when you drag in a conveyor? What does the operator look like in the unit-choosing windows when you start a new model?

A screenshot of your Help > About FlexSim window would be useful - it will give me some version and graphics info.

Thx

When I put in a conveyor, it's really small, but I make it bigger and my computer just slows down. new-model.png

@Madeline Z, thanks for the screenshots and additional info.

There is a chance that a newer graphics driver could help the situation:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/88345

Listed at that link are Intel's 2019 drivers for both Win 7 (32-bit) or Win 10 (64-bit). You can filter by your operating system if you have something else.

Please try updating your driver and let me know if there is any change.

We upgraded me to Windows 10. I was on windows 7 and the computer said I had the most up to date graphics driver. The computer runs slow because I'm still running such big files, but the computer doesn't freeze entirely anymore with Windows 10.
