I'm trying to turn a 1.5" hex shaft down to .5, using a left and a right hand 55deg tool. It starts ok, then starts rubbing/cutting on the back side of the tool, this tool should cut a 30 deg. cut no problem, then it starts hitting/cutting  on the backside of the insert before it gets to it finish diameter.

It may not cut a 30 degree no problem. Look at the picture below from Iscar's website. This is for a DNMG with a 93 degree approach. 27 degree is the max.
