Importing DXF

Importing DXF

Just downloaded FeatureCam Ultimate 2020 and cannot import .DXF files that were created on AutoCad. I'll click import, and choose the file. It goes through the motions and asks if I want to see the log. Weather I view the log or not, afterwards the drawing is no different.

Try navigating to Options > File > Import Types and set Autocad to Exchange.

I was having an issue with this recently as well and passed the info along to development. Exchange gave me better results.

Did you try setting back to Native?

Can you attach the file so we can troubleshoot this?

It won't let me attach the file. Says the file extension does not match the file. The hell?

Because we are an institution of higher learning we got the free version of the software.... Which means no technical support... Yay...

I called Autodesk to beg for another license for our 2017 software. I know how to navigate the software, it works flawlessly, I can get most jobs drawn in Autocad, transferred to Featurecam, programmed, and dumped into the Fadal and making chips in under 20 minutes. I have now spent 5 hours dicking around with one stupid part. The environment has completely changed. I don't know where half the stuff I need is. This just sucks all around.

When I begged Autodesk for another license for the 2017 software they said "No"... I asked why not?? They said we only go back 3 years. I asked why?? He said because that's how we operate... So I asked him again, why?? And all he could say is "Because that's how we operate"...

Can you try zipping it and then attaching it?

DXF issue aside, I want to address your issue with 2017. I assume you are frustrated with the ribbon layout vs. the old 'toolbar' layout.

If that is the case, I do want to point out that you can revert to the toolbar in 2018-2021.

To do so:

  1. Hold CTRL and Right-Click the status bar at the bottom of the UI to bring up the hidden menu.
  2. Uncheck Show Ribbon.
  3. You may have to restart FC at this point.

I think this will address your frustration with the new versions. LMK if that helps.

I've used the old interface (2017 and below) and the newer interface (2018 and above).  I can feel your pain in trying to navigate it and where to find things.  I suggest ditching the older seat and getting antiquated with the newer versions.  The ribbon interface trumps the toolbar based system, hands down in my opinion.

It will probably take you a few days to find where everything thing is.

Also, there is a way to work with the order interface in the newer versions.  If you are using FeatureCAM to program your equipment, you can do this.  But, if you are teaching students, I suggest just learning the new interface.

We can help here if you need it.  Autodesk never gave support to educational facilities, but you can get that here within the forum if you need it.

I appreciate the help, but this is all useless to me if I cannot import DXF files into FeatureCam.... No matter what I do the software acts as if it's importing and when it's done there simply isn't anything there. For what it's worth here's a log after the import.

Can you send me the part to my work email?  I am sure this is a simple issue.

Just an FYI... The reason I prefer DXF files is because here at the university there are probably a dozen or more different brands of software in use. And some are very antiquated. But all are able to export in DXF. Also 99% of everything we do is in 2D. In the last 15 years, I've had to program in 3D maybe half a dozen times...

Have you tried going to file import options, file types and change Autocad to Native? I don't think we use the exchange any longer.

@AJHanson

I've got his file and it imports in 2020 & 2021 when the import options are set to Exchange.  When set to native, the file loads in with errors, and no geometry is shown.

We are on the right track!

I changed Autocad from "Exchange" to "Native" and now it will import... Thank you all!

FYI: It only works if I save the file as DXF 2013 or older... Won't do DFX 2018. Dumb... I'm downloading some software updates. Let's see if that helps...

I am assuming you are referring to AutoCAD 2013 vs AutoCAD 2018.  If so, you may just need to revert the import option back to native.
