COVID-19 - Working from Home

Hey folks! I was curious as to how everyone was being affected by the current situation with COVID-19. How many of you are programming working from home now? What new challenges are you seeing? How many of you are still in the shop? Where are you located? How is everyone doing in terms of work coming in?

This is definitely a really unique and challenging situation we have all found ourselves in. If anyone is trying to get FC up-and-running in their home and has questions on anything from licensing, to tool cribs, to general programming, let me know! I'm here to help!

If you are stuck at home and can't be spending as much time in FC or in the shop as we would all like, I might encourage you to take this time to give Fusion a look. I won't lie to you, I'm a FeatureCAM guy through and through, but I would be lying to you if I said that I didn't think Fusion is really awesome in a whole lot of ways. As FeatureCAM subscribers, all of you should have access to Fusion. All you will need to do is download Fusion, and log in using your Autodesk Account credentials. Furthermore, Andrew Anagnost, our CEO, recently announced that we are giving free access to all of our cloud products, including Fusion.

There are absolutely areas where Fusion falls a little short, but in the same stroke, Fusion offers a lot of features and functionality that leave me wishing for more from FeatureCAM. I don't know that one tool is better than the other...they're just different.

If you get Fusion open and have no idea where to start, there are a few really good learning resources online:

  • Self Pace Learning - this site is my go-to for learning anything Fusion.
  • Fusion 360 YouTube Channel - LOTS of activity here. Tutorials, live streams, new features videos.
  • Lars Christensen - Can't talk about Fusion without bringing up Lars. Lars is not only a great guy but is the original godfather of Fusion 360 learning on YouTube.

This was quite the wall of text, but hopefully, it starts some good dialog! Let me know how you and your team are adapting to these strange times, and let me know how I can help!

Hi Kelbie,

Day one of lock down here in New Zealand and my work computer has been setup in the spare room so I can continue to program and do some edits to the post processors, however as we supply medical companies then we are on call to continue to service their needs.

Have been playing around with fusion and have to say from the design point of view its much easier to design fixtures in fusion than featurecam. We also use inventor so I found the transition easy, but I think it will be easier to train people to model in fusion than inventor (for what we use the software for).

My biggest gripe with fusion is that it is cloud based and several of our customers will not allow us to put their models through fusion.

So while I am at home I am going to play around with a lot more of the roughing strategies in fusion as I think they are far more intuitive than than say z-level roughing in featurecam which I feel is pretty outdated now.

I'm glad to hear you're still plugging away! I agree with pretty much everything you've put here.

Without a doubt, Fusion has FAR better abilities in the non-CAM stuff (design, drawings, simulation, etc). To your point about roughing, I totally agree with that as well. I really love being able to just drop a 3D Adaptive toolpath on the whole model and be done with it in a couple of clicks.

When you really start to get into the details with surface milling, multi-axis, turning, and turn-mill especially, you start running up against some capability barriers, but that's to be expected as they continually enhance the product.

I still personally prefer the automation and speed of programming (featurerec) in FC, but can't deny that Fusion is pretty awesome! Thanks for the response!
