Merging layers but keeping object properties (Color ect)

I have worked with many shop floor layouts that come from different contractors who don't have a good understanding of how to structure layers and thus the need arises to mere several layers into one. Shop floor layouts usually contain different colors and line types to help communicate the layout and flow of the layout. The merger command combines multiple layers into one layer then deletes the old layers but does not have an option to retain the properties of the objects within the layers that were merged. Could you add option (dialog box) to ask if you would like to retain object properties (Color, line type) when merging layers. Thanks!
