Is it Possible to Partially Link Assets to Spreadsheets

All,

Good afternoon!  I'm working with a user who has a rather elaborate spreadsheet that drives portions of their Inventor Engineering models and we're curious if the same approach would work for Factory Assets.  The idea is to take some values from the Asset, either from the Factory Properties or an iLogic form, place those into the spreadsheet and then obtain the corresponding values and apply those to the asset behind the scenes.  We don't want a permanent link, just a read / write - break the connection, every time someone tries to edit that asset.  I'm doing some additional research, but thought I would reach out to see if this could even be done and, if so, I would be ecstatic if someone could pass along some code snippets that I can build from.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Thanks in advance for any thoughts, hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Peace,

Pete

It is certainly possible to programmatically drive Factory behavior, based on a spreadsheet or whatever other external data source you'd like.

Hi Pete,

In my records lies this thread, where customer is using csv file to do this. And it leverage what Oleg said about API.

Hope it helps.

I also found a way to build dynamic drop down lists via the Excel, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Hi @petestrycharske ,

I am very interested in how you build this dynamic drop down list. Would you record a video? I am a fan of your videos.

@MickeyLi, thank you for the encouragement and the kind words!  My apologies for the delay, as I was busy with some other stuff and then I couldn't get the Excel link to work.  Turns out this is a growing issue, can't remember the other forum post offhand, but if anyone finds out that previously working code which was linking to Excel is NOT working; uninstall Microsoft Office, Restart the Computer and then reinstall Microsoft Office (perhaps another restart as well), should resolve the issue.  At least it has for myself, some of my colleagues and other users out there.

Anyway, below is the video.  The example is SUPER simple, but I think illustrates the idea that I've been rolling with it.  If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer!  Have an awesome and most blessed day!

ps. Please pray for the Minneapolis area, lots of people are hurting up here!

Peace,

Pete
