Hi,
From what I understand Factory Design software converts 2D drawings into 3D layout models!
Can this be explained in simple terms and what file formats would be required to produce this option.
Factory Design lets you integrate 3D models of machine components from its library.
What drawing format are these model components?
Does this software have shipbuilding library components?
The reason I am interested in Factory Design, is the prospect of incorporating a Ship design into a Factory Design 3D model to avail of this ability. My research is looking into a suitable design suite that could create this option.
Any advice for suggestion from anyone experience in this area will be appreciated
Regards
Niall

You're correct that FDS software can convert 2D drawings into 3D layout models, making it easier to visualize and integrate components. The software typically uses formats like DWG or DXF for 2D drawings and supports various 3D model formats, including STEP and IGES. The 3D components from the FDS library are usually in proprietary formats specific to the software, but they can often be exported to common formats. While FDS has extensive libraries, including machinery components, it may not have a specific shipbuilding library. However, incorporating a ship design into an FDS 3D model could be feasible with the right format conversions. As someone who deals with specialized equipment like the ankle straps cable machine, I understand the importance of finding the right tools for complex designs. Any advice from those with experience in this area would be greatly appreciated.
Hi allannpottss,
Thanks for your reply and clarifying the query in regards to FDS software. I suppose until someone has incorporated a ship design 3D model into FDS with the right format conversions, will we be able to understand if it is practical.

Hi,
I think you mix up something. FDS allows you to create 3D assets, that come with a 2D top view as a part of them. This part is used to allow placing assets in AutoCAD and, when syncing to inventor, populate the 2D top view you used to design your system in, with the 3D assets you created.
You can freely choose to start with either Inventor or AutoCAD and add whatever isn´t covered by the asset approach in one or the other package, maintaining adaptivity using the FDS factory add ins.
There is plenty of short videos giving a great impression. Have a look.
Hi Niall,
of course not. They even featured shipbuilding in this video. I also can recommend this older video, It shows a lot of the 2D to 3D functionality and the slides of what looks like an Autodesk presentation. As that´s basically when I started FDS, feel free to ask.
I hope this helps
Hi Logos_Atum,
Sorry to bother you again.
The links in your post don't seem to work for me. Any chance you could type out the link text detail, so I can input it myself.
