I have seen this a lot lately once a model starts to get many fabrication parts. Most the time for us once you click the "checkout" button Revit will crash. I found that if I go to the worksets within the Collaborate tab and make everything editable (Which will check everything out) then try to reload configuration and hit the "Checkout" all works as planned.
