Create New Service Template Not Copying Existing Template Correctly

I'm trying to create a new service template based on a copy of an existing service template. A process I have done multiple time before for similar services. In this case it would be a copy of "STORM - PVC"

When I try to complete this process I do get a service template named "Copy of STORM - PVC", but the template shows the buttons and settings of another service template instead of the template of choice. My Viega Megapress Service. When deleting the "Copy of STORM - PVC" the software acts as if I am deleting the Megapress service template instead of the "Copy" that is incorrect.

I cannot get around this glitch. Any help or insight as to why this is happening would be much appreciated. I've attached a screencast of what is happening for reference.

Hello @ZTR88 ,

This is strange behavior. I've only seen this once before. In the earlier case the database was restored to a backup from before the issue started happening. This resolved the issue before we were able to narrow it down.

Are you able to provide the following info to help us sort out what is happening:

  • Has this always happened when copying service templates, or did it only start happening just recently? Do you remember any changes made before this started happening?
  • Does this happen from any machine, or does it look to be specific with just one?
  • Is it happening with every service template you make a copy of, or specifically just the "STORM - PVC" when copied?
  • If you copy the service template, see the wrong items, and flip to something else and back, does it show the same incorrect items? If closing the program completely, and restarting it then getting  back to the edit service template dialog box, does it get back to the edit service template dialog, does it show the same incorrect items?
  • Have you migrated any services from older versions, is this only happening to the migrated services?

  • Issue has only recently started happening. 5 days ago to be exact. Worked properly with no issues for months prior.
  • Does this happen from any machine, or does it look to be specific with just one?
  • Issue occurs on both machines we have running on this database. Only occurs in one of 3 profiles we have though. We have two job specific profiles and "Global". The process seems to be working as usual in one job specific profile and the "Global" profile.
  • Is it happening with every service template you make a copy of, or specifically just the "STORM - PVC" when copied?
  • Seems to occur when trying to copy any service template. The first copy of "STORM - PVC" showed buttons from a victaulic service template. the second copy shown in the screencast showed buttons from the Viega megapress service template. I just attempted to make a third copy and the correct buttons showed up, but now I cannot delete the other incorrect copies as they will delete my victaulic and viega service templates also shown in the screencast.
  • If you copy the service template, see the wrong items, and flip to something else and back, does it show the same incorrect items? If closing the program completely, and restarting it then getting  back to the edit service template dialog box, does it get back to the edit service template dialog, does it show the same incorrect items?
  • Flipping back and forth between service templates does not resolve the issue. It still shows the incorrect items. Restarting the software does not resolve the issue and to a further extent neither does restarting the machine all together.
  • Have you migrated any services from older versions, is this only happening to the migrated services?
I haven't migrated any services from an older version of the database, software, or profile. I haven't imported or exported any services at all in at least a month.

Let me know if any of this information helps. Thanks,

Side Note : How would I go about restoring the database from a backup if I wanted to go that route? Do I need to have a backup that I saved manually and re-path everything to that backup datatbase? Or does Fabrication CADMEP have it's own automatic backup I can revert to somehow?

I don't know of any automatic backup, normally backing up the database is done in this way: Database Backup | Fabrication Products 2017 | Autodesk Knowledge Network

Hello @ZTR88 ,

After looking through the info and some of my own testing, I think we need the following:

  • Where it sounds specific to a profile, we would like to know what was copied into that profile when creating it. Do the settings differ from the other job-specific profile? If you're not sure, I'll be happy to check if you are able to share your configuration with us. If the file is too large to be uploaded, you can upload it here, or I'll be happy to send you a private upload link if you don't feel comfortable uploading it publicly.
  • If you create a new profile, does the issue happen there as well?

I copied about 10-15 services from our "global" profile. Not much changed except for layer colors and colors associated with constraints. Service templates stayed the same. Normally I would make adjustments to a service and create the service in "Global" as to not affect anyone working in the job specific profile and then "Exportsys" and "Importsys" into the job specific profile.

In this particular case the new service template would be exactly the same except that the support specification would change so I tried to make a simple copy of the service template in the job specific profile itself to save some time exporting and importing.

I have not tried creating a new profile since this occurred. When I do I will let you know how it works out.

The indexes for your services may be corrupt or out of sync.  There's a number of reasons that can happen that I won't speculate on here.

Make a copy of your database and perform a purge/compact on it. That should re-sequence the table index.  At this point, review your services (all of them) and make sure they are still using the proper templates.

Not really a solution as a way to test and fix a possible indexing problem.

Make sure you're on the current update. There was a release a while back that had a similar issue w/Materials that I reported.

Also, try duplicating the issue in different software versions (2018 vs 2019 vs 2020).

If it happens in one and not another, it's likely a software defect. If it happens across the board, regardless of version or service pack/update, it's likely a database corruption issue.

Thanks Darren! I feared the worst from the beginning that it was some sort of database corruption... I'm relatively new to the Fabrication software, Is there a link you can send me or a video that would go a little more into detail when it comes to purging/compacting the database?

I will check for updates and ensure we are current.

UPDATE : I spent my day today updating software and installing version 2020 so that I would have 18, 19 and 20 to run tests for this issue. (We were currently working out of Fabrication CADMEP 2019)

I pathed all three versions to the same database where the issue occurs.

In the 2018 version of Fabrication the database acted as it should. Copies of the service templates were made correctly and I was even able to delete the incorrect copy that had the wrong items in it without issue.

In 2020 the same issue occurred as in the original screencast from 2019. The service template was copied with the wrong items and when attempting to delete it a different template would get deleted instead.

I did notice that when selecting the current service template the menu was a bit different in 2018 vs 19/20. 2018 just lumped all service templates into one list vs 19/20 which sorted them by the associated group. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but it stuck out to me right away.

@ZTR88 ,

Thank you for that extra troubleshooting! Where the issue is not happening in 2018, but is in the two later versions it could definitely be an unexpected reaction from the program. it's still odd that profiles effect it though. Were you testing with the same profiles in 2018 and 2020? Also were you able to test creating the new profile?

In order to confirm and escalate to our team, I will need a copy of the database we can reproduce the issue from. Are you able to share this? I can send a private upload link if you like, or you can use the same one from my earlier post.

Hello @ZTR88 ,

I wanted to check in and see if you are able to provide those files for escalation, or if you had any questions or concerns. If so, let me know! I'll be happy to help.

I had the same issues.  Couldn't get the copy service template to work at all.   I tried everything, and nothing worked..... until I went back to 2018.  Works great.   Same database, profiles, templates.  etc.  It's definitely an issue with Cadmep 2019/2020.

I think this might have something to do with the Service Template ID Numbers. It just happened to me again and this time I noticed it was after importing a service and getting the "Import Service Conflict" alert. It matched services with completely different names and content but the same "ID Number". These services now are effected and acting weird. I selected "No" so that it imported the service template separate instead of overwriting, but now I have two different service templates named differently, but with the same ID Number...

Does anyone know where the Service Template ID Number info is stored or can be modified?

Autodesk! Can you publish the resolution link for this?
