Joaquim Moral is a Community Manager for the Spanish and English communities. He’s been with Autodesk just under a year and joined the Community Team for this role. Joaquim had lived in many countries around Europe and loves literature. If you’re looking for an example of someone who does not have the typical Engineering degree, read about his path to Autodesk below.
Question: What degree did you graduate with, and how has it affected your career? Or, what education / training do you have that has helped with your role?
Joaquim: I graduated in Arts History, and then did a Master's degree in Political, Social and Institutional Communication and a postgraduate degree in Cultural Management. With these degrees I worked on several public projects with communities and different social groups. Bringing together these studies has allowed me to better understand what it is like to work with a community, at a social and cultural level, understanding its particularities and being sensitive to the people who are part of it. A community is an exchange space that must be safe and inclusive, and this perspective and approach is what I work under. Social and humanistic studies provide people with transversal knowledge, sensitivity, and interest in understanding the other, which I think is essential to work with people and users.
Question: How would you describe your role as Community Manager at Autodesk? What does a typical workday look like? Which skills and qualities are important to be successful in your role?
Joaquim: My day-to-day work is usually varied, although a Community Manager has some daily tasks that must be fulfilled so that the user experience in the community is enriching—including taking care of the community, being present and connected, and keeping it in order. These tasks allow you to understand, especially if you are creative, that it is important to work constantly to collect successes with the community. Project development is also an important part of the job that allows you to be creative and innovate, working with company colleagues from different fields.
Question: What do you find interesting about your role? What are the challenges? What do you find satisfying about your work?
Joaquim: It is very interesting to work with communities and appreciate cultural differences, as well as understand their needs and accompany users so that their experience is the best possible. Without a doubt, being able to help others in their professional and creative processes is something enriching for me. Sometimes it is difficult to value with numbers and statistics these personal or group tasks/projects that you spend time creating, and they can sometimes not be valued as they should. This is one of the difficulties of committing to work that has a great social component. Proposing initiatives that add value to the user experience is something absolutely enriching and satisfying.
Question: What advice would you give to a student who is interested in pursuing a role like yours?
Joaquim: You must understand that the role of Community Manager is a role of accompanying users in their experience with the company. This implies that you must be sensitive to the different personal and communicative needs, as well as being able to lead and create an open and welcoming space for all users who want to get involved. Working today with a gender perspective and with an open view of the community is something essential that you must know and be sensitive to before putting yourself in charge of a community space.
