PCB Layer and Colors

Good Afternoon,

I am new to Eagle/Fusion and have recently begun transitioning from using Altium. One immediate change I wanted to make when I got into the system was to add some "mechanical" layers with varying colors as I would normally do in Altium. I was able to figure out how to create a new layer, but when I selected a new color it altered ALL the other colors in the Layer Set I had active (which is the default option, if that matters). 

I am confused as to why the program would default to making top layer silkscreen and bottom layer silkscreen the same color to begin with, but this "bug" just threw me for a loop. If there is a workaround, or if I am missing a key aspect in understanding how this is suppose to operate, I would love to be pointed in the right direction.

I'm not sure you understand my comment.

When I watch a video using Eagle from 2019, this problem doesn't exist. Every layer can have a color independent of every other layer. That is not the case as I try to change a layer color in Fusion/Eagle, they are all tied together and nothing is independent except for the copper layers.

I am not new to PCB design work. I have worked professionally in Altium for several years, I am only new to Fusion/Eagle.

To answer your question, here's the key piece of insight you need to understand how this works. When you change a layer color, you are not really changing that individual layer's color. What you are changing is the color of the palette square that layer refers to. If other layers refer to that same palette square then their colors will change also.

The key to only changing one layers color is assigning it to a palette square that isn't used by anything. By default, the top two rows are used. So you can assign the layer to any block in the remaining 6 rows and adjust that blocks color without running into problems.

I had assumed the blocks were "suggested common colors to choose from" not colors that are already in use. Thank you for the clarification.
