Fusion 360 DXF Export -> EAGLE DXF Import

Hi EAGLE Pros,

I've created a DXF file using myhub from a drawing I made in 360.  Now one would think that since both products are from Autodesk, a DXF from one product would interoperate nicely with the other, but that is not the case.  Any tips or tricks for this?

I'm currently using 9.3.1 and using the built in ULP for DXF Import.

Thanks,

Trey

The DXF import is basically a ULP which has existed for a long time (circa 2003 I believe) and has been updated over the years by Cadsoft and included into EAGLE in around 2012. It's had updates since then but the last minor tweak was back in 2017 by Jorge (originally Cadsoft and now Autodesk), judging by the file history. So no, I really wouldn't expect there to be any special level of compatibility here.

But, can I ask what you are trying to achieve going from Fusion360 to EAGLE in this way? I assume your dxf is mechanical outlines, holes, cutouts etc? Why not use the proper mechanism built into EAGLE/Fusion360 to integrate the two?

Best Regards,

Rachael

Rachael,

I'm fully aware of the history of the DXF ULP.  Just being a little snarky... 🙂

I normally would if it was a PCB outline I was trying to bring in, but I'm trying to go from a step model to a footprint for a PCB Module that will sit on the board I'm designing in EAGLE using some standoffs.  Last I check going from Fusion -> EAGLE is only for board outlines, correct?

Hi @Anonymous,

It's nice to hear from you again. You are correct that the Fusion > EAGLE integration is really for board outlines and obtaining a 3D model of the board. I'm afraid that currently, you are probably better off drawing the component outline in EAGLE directly or if the silkscreen outline of the part is complex you can export that sketch as a DXF and then import it.

When you want to generate a DXF from Fusion that can be imported easily into EAGLE you should use the Save DXF as Polylines plug in that you can download into Fusion360. The output of that plugin will play nice with EAGLE's DXF import.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
