Fixed rotation step in Schematic and Symbol Editor

Hello,

 

At work, very often I'm using Eagle to draw electrical schematics of different setups. I like it more than Microsoft Visio because it is much simpler to do it.  I don't need to design PCBs for these schematics since these schematics includes symbols for Power Supplies, Waveform Generators, Oscilloscopes etc. The only thing I care is to draw a nice schematic.

 

In my example I have an oscilloscope probe which I would like to place it somewhere in my setup at an angle smaller than 90 degrees. In Board Editor, if I want to do this with an object it is very easy: I just press alt while rotating and depending on alternative grid setup, I can place my package at any angle I want. Or I can type the angle directly in the Properties dialog. But this is not possible in the Schematic Editor Man Sad

I can place my probes at right angles but I don't like it. Maybe I will need to rotate something else later. What to do? Create a new rotated symbol every time ? Not a very good idea because also in the Symbol Editor you have only fixed angles Man Sad and fixed length for pins. So not so much freedom. 

 

Try to create a symbol like this and place pins instead of lines. You can't rotate the pins at finer angles and you can't customize their lengths. The workaround is to use 0 length pins and draw lines. But...why to draw lines instead of having more freedom when you customize your pins?

Oh, now I just remembered another issue, this time in the Board Editor: place more object in the design and try to do a fine group rotation :). Did you manged to rotate the group by pressing ALT key? I think you didn't but if you know a very easy way to do it, please share it :). If not, I maybe Eagle programmers will implement it in the futures updates. 

 

I hope this kind of small things will fixed in the following updates :).

Hi Daniel,

I hope you're doing well. Thank you for including the pictures and a clear explanation. I really appreciate you see.

It's interesting, you are using EAGLE to draw wiring diagrams something it's not really intended to do. In PCB schematics angles other than 90s and 45s are generally frowned upon since they can make complex designs unreadable.

With that said, the flexibility to define arbitrary angles in the schematic won't hurt anyone. I'll make an enhancement request for this.

In the board editor you can use the ROTATE command to rotate a group to any angle. Here's the procedure:
1) Define the group
2) Click ROTATE
3) On the top toolbar you'll see a combobox with the Angle of rotation. Click in it and type whatever angle you want and press enter.
4) Now ctrl+right click to on a point in the group to rotate. Whatever point you click on that will be the axis of rotation.

Please let me know if you continue to run into issues.

Thank you for your fast reply and for explaining how to rotate a group of objects in the PCB Editor! 

I really appreciate the support you offer here. It's great when someone hears you ! 

I will continue to post  similar topics every time I see something or I have a new suggestion. 

 

And yes, Eagle is a great tool for wiring drawings (even if it's not it's main purpose) compared with other tools designed for this. And the good thing it can be improved in the future.
