EAGLE is not saving user settings

Hello,

I just installed Eagle 8.3.1 (premium) on a new computer running Windows 10 Pro and none of my settings are saved after I close Eagle.

It doesn't remember any of my layer presets, it doesn't remember the number of maximum backup files to generate, basically nothing is saved after I close Eagle.

What's strange is that this does not happen on my computer running Windows 7.

Is anyone else with Windows 10 Pro seeing this? Is there a way to fix this?

What folder have you installed EAGLE into? Did you let it do the default C:\EAGLE.x.x.x\ folder or did you change it to be in C:\Program Files\? If you moved it then that's probably the issue as that folder doesn't allow write access by user applications and so EAGLE wont be able to store any changes in its files.

Best Regards,

Rachael

So, I just tried this on a Linux VM.

In EAGLE v8.2.0 (the last version I had previously tried on the VM) I can successfully change a setting and save it. In my test case I tried changing the UI icon scaling as I am getting it running in Linux with HiDPI.

I then tried again with the latest v8.3.1 and it will not save the change to the setting at all. Something has definitely broken here somewhere between these two versions and changes to settings are no longer saved.

Best Regards,

Rachael

My quick work around is to close v8.3.1, open up an earlier version of EAGLE, make and save the changes and then close it and re-open v8.3.1. It's not ideal but for now it should get you going until Autodesk give a better work around or a fix is released.

Best Regards,

Rachael

Hi jpdieffe,

The issue looks very strange and definitely is a critical one.

Could you please share some info about your Windows 10 Pro PC?
I need to know some details in order to reproduce your issue:

1) Your user name.

2) Your environment variables. Open cmd.exe and type 'set' then copy all output.

3) Your current earglerc.usr file (c:\users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\CadSoft\EAGLE\eaglerc.usr

4) What is your user system language (English?).

5) What is your system locale? Control panel -> Region -> Administrative (tab) -> Current language for non-Unicode program.

Feel free to send the info by direct message on this forum.

Regards.

Hi @jpdieffe,

Thank you for providing extra information about your PC.

All looks good and I don't see anything known that could cause issues.

I tried 8.3.1 on Windows 10 Ent, MacOS and few Linux distros.

All of them save settings as expected.

I could only suggest deleting C:\Users\jpdie\AppData\Roaming\CadSoft folder and try again.

If it would not work then make sure C:\Users\jpdie\AppData\Roaming\CadSoft\EAGLE\eaglerc.usr is accessible for writing.

Hi @rachaelATWH4

What Linux distro did you use for testing?

Hi @jpdieffe

I would also guess that Eagle 8.3.1 crashes on exit.

We don't know what causes it on your machine.

I would suggest clicking "File->Save all" after you made changes. At least this is easier than making the changes in another version of Eagle.

I'm sorry you have to experience such inconvenience.

Eagle 8.3.1 does not crash on exit actually.

And Eagle 8.3.2 has the exact same problem.

Both the different version of Eagle and the Save All trick work.

Interestingly, Eagle 8.2.2 wouldn't let Eagle 8.3.1 or Eagle 8.3.2 open .brd or .sch as the default program.

Thanks for the help,

Hope this gets fixed

Hi @jpdieffe

Thank you for the feedback and info about 8.3.2.

I still think that Eagle crashes (or at least doesn't exit properly) on your particular Windows 10 PC.

Because this is only one explanation of the described issue.

And as far we can't reproduce it and there are no other users who reported the same issue we need your help to solve it.

Could you check if Eagle exits properly?

1) Open command line (cmd.exe)

2) Execute 'c:\EAGLE 8.3.2>eaglecon.exe'

3) Do some changes in settings (icon size, for example) and close Eagle.

4) in the same command line type: 'echo %ERRORLEVEL%`

It will print return code (a number): 0 - Eagle exits properly, any other number - error.

Hope you could post the result here.

Thank you.

EAGLE 9.6.2 still has the same problem with Windows 11 Pro. Fortunately doing Save All does save the customizations. But it must be done from the Schematic for customizations done there, and from the Control Panel for customizations done there.

Will this be an issue with every new Windows version?

I had this problem with 9.6.2, looking at the properties of C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\CadSoft, I could see it was set to read only (checkbox) , deselecting this (and for all subfolders) fixed the issue and my setting changes now appear when restarting the program.

Cheers!
James

Edit: This is for Windows 10

I got it to work. I usually open schematics by going to the schematic file and double-clicking; which then starts up EAGLE. I was able to log in from the EAGLE control panel when I did not have a schematic open.
