Eagle 8 (2017) poor and outdated download and updating for Premium Users

For the past 10 years or so, most application have allowed auto-updates, seamlessly in app.

I totally understand EAGLE is now owned by a legacy enterprise software company, but this is the poorest download and update process I've seen in computer software in modern times. Autodesk please update the process to last the early 2000's experience.

The splash screen that I've attached - indicates an update available, I'm premium however the link to "update" is for the free version. And unlike previous EAGLE releases ... Premium and Free are *DIFFERENT* downloads. Before it was the same download and allowed to install a license file.

And the whole manage audodesk software - is a HORRIBLE experience for us small scale and individual users coming for the pre-aquisution. Have to login, and navigate 3-4 clicks to find the download. Then, I can't even tell what is the current version for download. In order to see if it is a different version, I actually have to download it. Oh yeah, and WTF is up with needing pop-up enabled to download ?!

I don't need all that extra [ stuff ] with the software manager. Just let me update and get on with my date.

I'll also file a support request too, because for the price of this software, this is totally an unacceptable support experience.

This is NOT true. As per every other version of EAGLE that has gone before in the last however many years, the only thing that you need to do to enable a subscription is to use the correct licensing. The only change is that whereas the licensing was previously by a license code it is now via subscription and requires authentication over the internet.

If you have the "freeware" license installed all you do is go to the EAGLE control panel and choose File -> Sign Out. Then File -> Sign In and once it has validated your entitlement with the servers will enable the level of subscription you have paid for.

Where did you get the idea you need to download something different? I've seen a few people mention this now and it's not correct.

Auto updates on CAD software you absolutely need repeatability on? As a professional you may often need to go back to a specific version and if you have auto updates in place within the app you take away that option.

I do agree that the method for downloading the latest update file could be less bothersome though. If it's showing you the update within EAGLE you should be able to click a button and download the installer straight from there without having to go the the Autodesk website and clickety click around there. If they are trying to get metrics on who it using what then it's not necessary to do that as you need to log in with your Autodesk account when you run the new version anyway.

Best Regards,

Rachael

I got this for actual trial and error.  I could not get the freeware version to correctly authenticate ... (or possibly couldn't find it) ... I couldn't get it to sign it at all.   It wasn't until I download the version from the manage.autodesk that I could actually get it to say "premium".  Both 8.0 and 8.0.1 on the Mac did this for me.  When I downloaded the manage.autodesk premium download ... it "just worked".

Though I'm also getting kind of annoyed thinking about this sign-in/out - though I probably won't use Eagle offline ... I'm slightly annoyed that something this expensive might require the internet to validate the licensing.

Could it be you were not looking in the EAGLE control panel window when you were looking for the Sign In/Out options? If you were in the schematic, board or library editors the option isn't there.

Unfortunately the internet connection requirement is a policy that Autodesk have implemented and I doubt they will back down on. It will cause issues for people who have patchy or no internet access or for people who work in secure environments with no allowed network access to the outside world for security reasons. For most people it's not a huge problem, just an annoyance when EAGLE was really simple to license previously. It could have been worse, they could have decided to use Flexlm style licensing like so many other CAD packages (and Farnell did this briefly when they owned EAGLE but reverted when there was a mass revolt).

Hi dpdVYVVP,

I have notice that the latest release of EAGLE is available first via the Autoedesk Account Entitlement page than the web page.  Seems like the web page takes a bit longer to update.  I am guessing that the preference is to update the entitlement page, then web developers need to update the links.  This transition might take a bit longer after the official link has been made available.  I am certain this time gap will reduce as new releases continue being made available.

Best Regards,

Ed

My frustration with their process is very similar to yours.

I have bitten the bullet and acquired Altium Designer...

Wow, what a product...

Hi dpdVYVVP,

First, I would like to thank you for being a long time loyal user of EAGLE, greatly appreciate it.  We are really sorry that the new system has caused certain level of confusion as you update EAGLE.  This is an area we can use some improvement and it is actually being worked on.  At this time the downloads are different, but they should be the exact same file, your login will enable your premium entitlement.  I will inform our developer regarding  your concerns and add this link for reference.

Thanks again for your participation and comments.

Best Regards,

Ed

"Bitten the bullet" as in "I gave my firstborn on the altar of Altium"?
How much is that these days? I remember when it was something like 6000GBP per seat for a year (not sure about the version, etc.)

I think it's nearer 10k GBP these days although I think they are currently still offering a 40% discount to EAGLE users at the moment. But still, it's going to be nearly 6k GBP! It's a perpetual licence but you only get updates and support for 1 year with that. Anybody using it professionally will likely want to be on support so that's probably another 1k-1.5k GBP per annum to keep the maintenance agreement up to date.... which is a lot more than an EAGLE premium subscription in itself.....

I am having the same problem. I was using the free version and today I paid for and downloaded and installed the standard version of Eagle.

When I open Eagle it is still the FREE version. I tried the log out/ log in and it still comes up with the FREE rather than STANDARD version I paid for.

If I click on File->License Information, nothing appears.

How can I get the STANDARD version to appear? Not a happy customer. This should not have been difficult

Hello @wildlandsecurity,

I hope you're doing well. Your issue is different from the original posters. There are two things to try here.

1) Sign out of EAGLE and then sign in again. At that point EAGLE should refresh the entitlement.

If 1 doesn't work then we have to try 2 which is a bit more involved.
2) Close EAGLE. On your C drive browse to Users/username/Appdata/Roaming/eagle . Delete all of the .subscription files in that folder. Restart EAGLE and sign in. You should be set now.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. In the future it's best to start a new thread when you see that the thread you are about to post to is several months old.

Hi Edwin,

Just to let you know, as of yesterday, my account is now showing up as
"standard" as it should, rather than "free".
I don't know what was done to make that happen, but it works now. Hope it
sticks!

Thanks for your help!
