EAGLE 8.0.0 Icons

I'm trying out 8.0, and the first thing I noticed is that the icons are the newer style.   I checked the user interface configuration, and don't see a way to set them back to the classic style.  Has this feature been removed?

Hello Brian,

I hope you're doing well. At this moment there is no mechanism to switch the icons back to classic style. It was determined that we didn't want to have to separate interfaces to support officially.

So far you are the first to bring it up, so if many more users bring up the issue then we will definitely listen and do our best to accomodate.

Jorge-

I guess the beta testers just accepted this.    I certainly understand not wanting to support separate interfaces, but...

From a usability/user experience this makes it difficult, since I noticed that the toolbar buttons are not in the same place.   Particularly Copy and Move.  Now, every time I go to select a button, I experience cognitive dissonance every time I go to the tool bar.    First, because the icon is not the same, and then, when I do look at the toolbar, I have to figure out the new icon, then the new position.  This slows down my workflow.  After 15 years, I know what I need to do, and where the button is, without giving it much thought.

Of course, the same thing happened with AutoCAD LT -- the best feature (once the ribbon was added) was the ability to turn it off, and use the menus.   I have 25+ of experience with the menu, and know where everything is.  Maybe something similar could be done.

Brian

PS: Are you still in FL or did you relocate as part of the Autodesk acquisition?

Hi Brian,

I'm still here in Florida, and very happy to be here. I know what you mean I initially had the same issue. It was determined that having copy next to paste made more sense and that long term users would probably be able to adjust.

I got used to it already but I've been able to play with builds for the last few weeks. Since you are a very experienced user have you considered the keyboard shortcuts I find they speed me up considerably.

Thanks for your feedback and keep it coming.

Best Regards,
Jorge Garcia

PLEASSSSSSSE go back to the old icons.  I don't need any new ones to learn.

It's horrible ever since, and the first thing I did after installed the V8 for evaluation was trying to switch back to the classic icons. The new icon set has no contrast at all and was horrible ever since introduced. If you don't wanna maintain 2 sets of icons, please get rid of the "new" icon set and consistently use the classic one.

Just installed a eagle 8 on a 64 bit PC.

Not only that the clear old icons are gone, there are some changes in the buttons order too.

Until autodesk, cadsoft developers were updating the software with verry small steps, remaining behind the competitors with about 10 years.

Now you are forcing updates on the interface and licensing, as if that's all about.

Sorry autodesk, it's just one fail after the other.

The moving of some of the buttons I do find annoying, it definitely slows you down when something has moved from where it's always been. Group, Move and Copy, probably some of the most used buttons, have all been shuffled around along with Paste, Change and Delete. Other than some developers OCD regarding the order of the icons not being how they would have done it, I don't see any good reason for changing the order.

Autodesk, whilst I don't particularly care for the old style icons, I actually quite like the prettier new ones personally and they are actually improved in v8 in some cases, I really don't like that things have been needlessly moved. Remember, some of us have to switch between older versions of EAGLE and the latest so having things in different places depending on what version you happen to be running isn't really acceptable. Please can you put them back to the order they used to be in as closely as you can (I know there are a few new buttons) and promise not to make arbitrary changes like this in future?

Although I don't use them I do think you should re-enable the older icons too though. It can't be too much of an overhead to support the old icon set too, I know you need to get them updated to support proper scaling etc but in the grand scheme of things the cost will be minimal and it'll be one less thing the remaining long term users will have to adapt to and overcome.

Many thanks,

Rachael

I have to agree. Moving the buttons around was just stupidity. Having switched to V8 I suddenly find myself clicking the wrong buttons.

I generally don't look at what the buttons are, I just click from memory of where I am used to them being. It's much faster that way. But now I end up clicking the wrong button every time because they've been moved.

Additionally the old icons are far clearer than the new ones. In fact the change of icons is one of the reasons I never bothered with Eagle V7. The new ones are fashion at the expense of clarity.

At the very least changing the buttons back to where they used to be would be a start. Ideally it would be great to be able to have the old icons back too, but I could live without if the buttons were back where they used to be.

If it was a option in the settings to revert back to the old layout that would be great.

Count me in for the old icons. It is trivial to make the icon toolbar configurable the way people like it. I need the MOVE icon with a vertical and horizontal line and the delete icon with an X, because I can't find the trashcan icon, hard to read! All the icons are hard to read and fuzzy. Plus, new functions could be set up on the configurable toolbar by those who need it.

Hallo,

have you tried to set a bigger icon size.

This is the only way to find a useful thing at this new icons.

For me this was a very good step in the right way.

If you use the V7 an the icon are to fuzzy for you use my V7 color optimized icon set:

http://www.aftec.de/eagle/EeagleIconsAF.zip

Just copy the alle icons in the /bin/icons folder.

If I have some leisure I will paint all old icons for new eagle. 😉

Greetings Andreas

I'm currently in the process of drawing out all the old style icons again as 32x32 .png files. I'll post them once I'm done.

Hello,

I you invest so much time, its better to use the svg-vector format,

so we can use the new icons with higher screen.resolutions.

With 32x32px the Buttons are very tiny.

Please consider you have more than 200 icons to redraw!

Greetings Andreas

I'm about a quarter of the way there then if there are 200.

Although a quite few of them are duplicates where a button is greyed out which are easy to produce.

Yea, but I wanted the OLD STYLE ones, not the modern :D, the ones where delete is a red EKS. "X" Or black. The trashcan is just whatever blending with the background noise.

These old ones you mean?

EagleIcons.png

Still a work in progress - more to do.

Hmm. Eagle doesn't seem to want to use the icons. Despite the fact that I've deleted the svgs and replaced the pngs with custom ones, it still somehow is using the stock icons.

Thoughts?

YESSS, I simply know what those do! Oh, see! A resistor! With a VALUE!
The ones I need are the Floppy, Schem, PCB, Delete and MOVE, others are not critical.
I tested it and I could identify those from 4 meters distance, except for delete, for which I needed 2.5 meters. The current trash can... let's say I can't see it from 0.5m distance even if I'm looking at it. Most of the icons have beautiful clarity and non-ambiguity.

I don't think this is the place where the usual "take off and nuke from the orbit" would work... oh wait, it would.

from the folder trawl, I think there are MANY icon files, I mean, many different folders and maybe some packed inside of files, but 8.2.0 also uses the folders of previous installations. (linux), not sure what you use.
Message 20 of 36

Hi @t.carpenterRRQM5,

Thank you for the effort and time you have put into these, they look great! At this point in time, custom icons only work under Windows. The Mac and Linux distributions have a flaw that doesn't allow for the custom icons to be displayed so EAGLE defaults to the new icons.

I have added the entirety of this thread to the enhancement request we have on file for this issue and the devs are looking into it.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
