Creating a custom PCB board outline

Hello everybody,
I am having some significant troubles importing a .dxf file into Eagle.

Lets say I want to import this image.
skull.JPG

I have it saved as a .dxf file and I'm using the DXFimport ULP.
When I do this it only creates a few lines of the desired pattern as shown below.

Does anyone know of a good guide on how to do this from start to finish?
Kind regards,
Johann

I posted on this issue last Friday. I have not received a response from others, or from Staff as of yet.

I'm guessing it has to do with way the path is closed (or not) when the DXF file is exported.

I have had some success with exporting files from Fusion 360, but even then it's not 100% reliable.

Since the ability to create a complex board design in Fusion, then create a new board in legacy Eagle has been broken, here is yet another approach you might take.

This workflow seems to be entirely broken now. I just went to design a PCI-E card, and can't Push the board back to fusion. The board outline is closed in both Eagle and Fusion. Stuck now, and getting a little frustrated.

Hi j.wyss,

Thank you for posting on the Autodesk EAGLE forum. At this time the DXF import ULP would be the best to use. You need to make sure you are using the appropriate units and scale. It is often this will take a few tries to get it right. If you don't mind, please share the DXF file that way we can review and provide you some more ideas.

You can also try converting the image into a monochrome bitmap file.  Then you can use the importbmp.ulp ULP. This import option does provide some additional controls.

Please let me know if you are still encountering issues trying to push your design from EAGLE to Fusion 360.

Best Regards,

Ed

I Updated to 9.6.0 yesterday, and DXF import seems to be working now. Was it fixed with the upgrade?

Also, for clarification, is invoking DXF import from the file menu the same as running the ULP?

In all Eagle versions up to 9.5 the DXF import was limited to certain types of drawing primitive that mapped nicely to the simple lines and arcs that Eagle supported. I see from the release notes that V9.6 now allows "splines" in the board outline. I wonder whether your problem was that your DXF contained splines?

It may be that during the export from fusion that some of the arcs were converted to splines. Most of my DXFs contain arcs created by the fillet command.
