Commercial Use of free Version

Hi all,

for one single, small project I would like to use Eagle commercially.

The free version will be sufficient.

Is commercial use allowed in the free version?

Thankfully

Hi

No, we don't allow commercial use of the free version

but when your project could be finished in 4 weeks

you'll be ok with Eagle Standard for $15

Can you clarify this as the download page for the free version specifically says it's for

"PCB design software for students, makers, and professionals."

What instance would a professional use this software in a non commercial application?

I cannot find details that the free version is only to be used in a non commercial setting.

Eagle in general

To evaluate it.

It's in the name: Free Trial

It doesn't say "Trial" anywhere on the download page?

By all rights and purposes a "Trial" version wouldn't have any limitations and would only be allowed for a certain "Trial" period. I do not see any time limit of the free version.

Seems clear as mud.

Hi Dirtyengineer,

What controls your EAGLE session limitation is your Autodesk Account program entitlement.  Use your Autodesk account to launch your EAGLE session the first time.  If you have not purchased a subscription, EAGLE will start with the free options after you login with your Autodesk account.  EAGLE will change according to the purchased subscriptions and add the entitlements to your Autodesk account.  What I am trying to say, is that its the same download for everyone, your entitlement defines the type of session EAGLE will run.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Ed

Hello Edwin

I understand how the licensing works. Thank you for detailing that.

I'm trying to understand an application engineer's crass replies to legitimate questions.

If the free version is only a "Trial for non-commercial use only", Shouldn't this be detailed on the download page?

Can you please point me to where the stipulations of Eagle commercial use are detailed so I may inform myself?

Thank you.

To the OP's point, it really doesn't say whether or not you can use it for commercial purposes on the download page, nor does it say free trial. It says "Free Download" on that page.

This is probably just a web content issue on Autodesk's part. I've included a screenshot of the section and of the download link where the file doesn't indicate free trial or non-commercial use only.

This is an action item for Autodesk to handle.

But to answer the question of the OP, I would suspect that when software installation happens, there is a EULA/TOS that you have to check which covers the legal details of what you can and cannot do(legally) with the software.

I would surmise there isn't a "fudge" factor for Autodesk determining what is and isn't "commercial use". Ie, "Maker" could mean making for your own purposes and not for resale(even though many Makers DO make for resale). It would be helpful for Autodesk to clarify the use cases under which conditions the non-commercial and commercial cases are triggered to make it easier for current and future end users to determine which version of the software will fulfill their needs. Ie, I don't think it falls into the case of, "If I just make a dozen and sell them at the local MakerFaire, is that low enough to not count as commercial use?". But really, Autodesk should make the effort on their part to clarify that.

Ie, Autodesk would benefit from not assuming that all users are well versed in business/legal/commercial definitions and terms. If Autodesk hasn't already, they should have a FAQ page regarding this on their site and link to it to reduce the effort involved in explaining the concepts to users.

The one place where it does show that it is for non-commercial use, is after you have installed Eagle, and have logged in with your autodesk account.

Hi Dirtyengineer,

I will do my best to look into this or place a request to update our pages to better describe license definitions.  In earlier version of EAGLE we would describe this fairly simple, if you charge for your design time or sell your designs for a profit then you need a commercial license.  If you are working on personal projects, then you qualify for the free version or make licenses that were available.

For now, the Free version is intended for personal project or possibly just sharing ideas with the community. I will try to get you more information. All paid subscriptions are commercial licenses, so no grey area here.

Best Regards,

Ed

When do you plan to update your website?  I just wasted my time downloading Eagle Cad to find that me a professional can only use it for non commercial use!!  Evaluation is evaluation.  I have never heard of it being called professional use!

You can't get an AutoCAD license for 15 dollars for a month, that'll cost a lot more. This thread is talking about Autodesk EAGLE, the Schematic/PCB package originally developed by CADSoft, now owned by Autodesk.

Dear ,

I want use Eagle v9.2.2 FreeVersion in my R&D working group for one PC working place. The program will be used only inside the group and as it provides maximum 2 layers only for internal used PCBs. It means that with Eagle FreeVersion designed PCBs will be never sold or payed from others. Moreover they should be used only inside the group.

Therefore my question is: Can I use free version of Eagle under above conditions if the company itself is a commercial organization?

Hello @AKozhinov,

I hope you're doing well. Thank you for your question, because it is a commercial organization then you should get a commercial entitlement. The company stands to profit from your research, so money will be made from those PCBs even if it's not directly from selling them.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
