Change Eagle Installer Path, Allow True Upgrades, Set Defaults, Fix Annoyances

Eagle always asks to upgrade from one version to another, which is odd because I often find myself wanting to upgrade but instead it provides a link to your website to download a side by side installer. This is annoying for three reasons:

  1. The button forces my PC to open Internet Explorer, an awful horrid program I never use - it is not my default browser so why on earth would you go against my choice of default internet browser to manually force open this disgusting piece of crap? Every other link on the PC opens up in my choice of default application.

  2. When I click a download or upgrade button I expect the download to begin instantly, not to then open a browser to a download page requiring additional steps. The application should download the update installer without a browser and then launch it. By virtue of the version installed the program should know which version to download,... in other words Eagle for Windows should automatically know to download Eagle for Windows and not Mac etc.

  3. Eagle always asks me if I want to upgrade from one version to another - and when I click yes - that is exactly what I want to do. But instead, Eagle installs a full side-by-side version and does not "upgrade" at all. This makes the installer larger as well since I need to download the full program each time (not a big deal but could be more efficient). I end up with more than one version of Eagle installed at the same time when I wanted to upgrade. This brings me to a related complaint - the default installation path for the application should be "\Eagle\" not "\Eagle x.x.x\". Be default the path should remain the same between minor versions so I would even be OK with "\Eagle x\". This makes upgrade installation more intuitive for your side but it also makes shortcuts easier on our side. I use a custom quick launch bar for my common applications which I can just drag desktop shortcuts to. Whenever I upgrade even a minor update to eagle the icon opens the old version because A) there are now two versions installed and B) the path is different even for a MINOR bug fix update.

You probably think "Yes but some people want more than one version installed in case a new bug is introduced or for various other reasons" and you would be right. But this is probably not the default use case. All you have to do is allow the user to set a custom installation path if they want to have side by side installations - but let the majority of us use the default upgrade method with a standard universal path for ease of use.

Also, there should be settings for things there are no settings for currently. Such as default units. I can set my grid to 5 mils or 1mm (or any desired value) in every single place, screen, menu, library, schematic, etc. But the choice is overridden by the programs default. For example, in a library if I create packages with a grid of my choice, I can use the package button to open and edit additional packages or create a new one and my grid stays the same. I can switch to schematic and back to package and the grid stays the same. If I open the library table of contents and double click a package the grid is back at Autodesk default settings. Or I can set my grid to mils and take a dimension but the dimension tools has it's own default of mm rather than reading my grid choice. Things of this nature, program defaults with no user settings. The text size for pad names is currently set to some percentage of the pad size (and inexplicably is on the pad layer) - if I have a rather large pad, say a grounding pad for a screw hole, the pad name text ends up cover 1/4 of my entire small board which gets in the way of placing parts and laying out the board. The only way to turn off the text in the board editor is to disable the pads layer which makes layout impossible. It's lose lose.

Hi Nicholas54,

We have many of your suggestions on our roadmap already, so it's nice to see someone in the community request this.

Just in case you weren't aware of it, you can use the eagle.scr files to setup defaults and I find that to be a very convenient and portable way to define defaults. See HELP CHANGE, HELP SET, and HELP GRID for some of the parameters you can predefine in the eagle.scr.

Keep your eyes open I think you'll be pleased with the changes we are making in this area.

Best Regards,
