Can't change layers while manually routing simple 2-layer board

Hi All,

When I switched to 9.3.0, I immediately had problems switching layers while routing differential pairs.  Pressing the center mouse button no longer changes layers (still doesn't).  As I experimented, I discovered that selecting a different layer from the drop-down menu did still work and got me through the hump.  The original case is here: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/eagle-forum/9-3-0-can-no-longer-change-layers-while-routing-diff-pair... At the same time, clicking the center mouse button did change layers normally for normal (single-ended) traces.

Today I have started a simple new 2-layer board and cannot route it because I cannot change layers using any method (center mouse button, pull-down, even the layer command).  It looks like Eagle is trying to change layers showing me a visual prompt (there's a small orange circle around the trace being routed), but clicking or dragging never shows a trace on the bottom side.  Dragging makes Eagle behave as if it is trying to miss obstacles on the top layer.

If I select the bottom layer (16) and drag from a through-hole component pin, the trace does route on the bottom layer, but I cannot change to the top-side.  Interestingly enough, the auto router can switch layers and route on both sides.

Needless to say, I'm dead in the water trying to get this board routed.

Thanks for your help,

Scott

Interesting -- running the autorouter seems to have fixed the problem.  I can now use any method to change layers while routing.  Vias are placed correctly and the trace appears on the correct layer.

I think you may have been caught out by a subtle change of behaviour a few versions back. You don't say which version you switched to 9.3 from but I'm guessing it was older than 9.0?

In pre-Autodesk Eagle, clicking the middle mouse button while routing would immediately drop a via and switch sides.

In 9.x (and, I think, late 8.x) the middle mouse (or space bar) merely attaches a "potential" via to the cursor. You then have to left click to drop it and get the new layer. Annoyingly, for those of us who design multi-layer boards, there's no obvious indication of which layer that will be until you commit to it (it's actually a cycle-through-them method so you need to count presses).

The reason for the change is that the old way "didn't sit well with" the new obstacle avoidance routing method.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I am been keeping very up-to-date.  So I had been using 9.2.x.
