Block feature broken in 8.0.0?

Tried the new Autodesk version and I am unable to mark a block, neither on schematic nor in PCB editor. No rectangle, no polygon boundaries. What's going on?

When you create a block, be sure and pay close attention to the command line at the bottom of the window.  You should:

1) select "create design block from selection"

2) select the stuff you want in schematic (pay attention to the task bar at the bottom of the EAGLE window)

3) ctrl/cmd + right mouse to switch editors

4) add selective objects using cmd + click (if you want to add items)

5) ctrl/cmd + right mouse to save.  (again, follow the task bar at the bottom)

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Matt

I don't want to create a design block. I simply want to move a few parts together on the schematic or PCB - a very basic editing function which always worked in previous versions of Eagle. It doesn't work in 8.0.0, at least for me.

Hi BlueDraco,

Greatly appreciate your participation on the forums, the Group Command is automatically selected when EAGLE v8 starts.

- Press and hold the left mouse click and define the group (Components will appear highlighted when the group is defined)

NOTE: Press and hold the CTRL key and left click the item you wish to subtract from the group.

- Press and hold the SHIFT key, left click on one of the component origins.  You will notice the group move attached to your mouse cursor.  Depressing the left mouse button places the group.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Ed

Now that's really strange. I use Eagle since version 4.09 on daily basis. I know how group feature works. I have three versions of Eagle installed: 6.6.0, 7.7.0 and 8.0.0. Group works normally in 6.x and 7.x. It doesn't work at all in 8.0.0. With Group button pressed, I click the left mouse button and drag the mouse - no rectangle is shown! Same when trying to define a non-rectangular group - no polygone lines are shown, no group is selected, but when I click the left mouse button the nearest object is selected, lik the Group was inactive.

After opening the same design in 6.6 or 7.7 everything is ok, grouping works as it always did.

Something is wrong with my 8.0.0 and I don't know what.

Ok, solved it by myself.

First, tried to reinstall Eagle. No difference.

Then I noticed another topic in this forum about "Group ommand default on" option.

After unchecking the option In Options/Set/Misc group selection started to work.

After checking it back, group selection stops working.

So, the solution for me is to keep the option unchecked.

Maybe it is somehow related to the fact that I have three verions of Eagle installed and all of them share the same EAGLERC file.

Hi BlueDraco,

The thing here is that the Group Default On option fundamentally changes how group works so it's going to behave very differently then you are used to. If you want EAGLE to work the same as it always has then go ahead and uncheck the option as you have done.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

So, how exactly should I define a group of objects with the option turned on in 8.0?

Group button in the toolbar is active.

I press the left mouse button on the schematic or PCB and try to move the mouse with the left button pressed, like I always did with all Eagle versions prior to 8.0. No shadowed rectangle appears, so I cannot see the group boundary while trying to mark a group. After moving the mouse with left button pressed, when I release the left button only one item closest to cursor's original position is highlighted.

Hi BlueDraco,

Would you be able to produce a screencast of what you see? I have a sneaking suspicion that something might be wrong on your end if you are not seeing the selection boundary.

What operating system are you running?

Let me know.
