I want to include a DIP14 socket in my BOM but don't need it to show on my board layout, since the IC that mounted into it has the same footprint. Is there are way to do this, or do I just manually edit the BOM to include the socket?

Hi @infinite.machinery,

I hope you're doing well. The best approach right now is probably to manually edit the BOM to include the socket.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Its a little involved, but here is what I do.

  1. In my library with micro controllers that are to be placed into a socket, first create a device with a schematic symbol and a footprint.
  2. Copy the device and append SYMBOL_ONLY to the device name. For example MSP430 becomes MSP430_SCH_ONLY
  3. VERY IMPORTANT. Edit the device and remove all attached PCB footprints. Final device can have NO FOOTPRINTS
  4. Add an attribute _EXTERNAL_  to the newly created symbol with an empty value. This attribute is in addition to all of the other part attributes that the part should have.
  5. Use the created device (the one with _SCH_ONLY) in the schematic.

If everything worked out, then the device will not be in the PCB. If you run a BOM tool in the schematic, it will appear ion the schematic.

Here is a forum post where I discovered how to do this. You can also search in the Help doc build into EagleCAD for _EXTERNAL_ and it will provide some additional information.

Off Board components - NOT to be included in PCB??
