How do I add inner layers to an existing 2-layer design? Eagle 7.6 Professional Ed

Hi Bertil.larsson,

Thanks for you participation on the forum, greatly appreciate it.  In the DRC/Layer tab you will find a Setup field, you will setup your layer stack up here.  You need to realize your are working from the outer layer to the inner layers.  The default setup is for 2 layers (1*16), for a 4 layer stack you can user (1*2+15*16) and so on.  

On the EAGLE Reference manual take a look at section 6.3 (Page 147-148 & 175).

There is a document in the EAGLE\Doc folder called "layer-setup_designrules.pdf" with many layer stack-up examples.

Hi,

thankyou for replying to my probleem. I have followed your advice and it works for new designs. I have a two layer design (1+16) where I have made some work already and when I change the setup to ((1*2)+(15*16)) in the menue DRC-layers the new layers still don't show up in the layer menue in board editor.

Hello Bertil,

I hope you're doing well. Make sure that you use (1+2*15+16) and not ((1*2)+(15*16)), don't add the internal parentheses. Those internal parentheses define buried vias which in most cases you don't want to use because they increase the cost and complexity of the board.

Now if you still don't see the internal layers then you'll have to run the following in the command line:

 

Set Used_Layers 1 2 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 91 92 93 94 95 96;

 

Copy that to the EAGLE command line and hit enter and you should see the internal layers now.

I'm new to this software so don't be surprise if I make a stupid question.

 

I'm trying to make my own arduino mega shield so I open a file with the mega and started to delete everything on it. I got rid of most of the schematic but still have a bunch of extra layer and things that I don't need. How I can get rid of the extra layers?

Hi @jcsantilli,

I hope you're doing well. Without seeing a picture it's hard to tell you what to do. The Arduino mega is a two layer board so you shouldn't have any additional layers. By default EAGLE comes with a stock set of layers for different purposes and these should not be removed in the general case.

If you could start a new thread and include a picture of what you would like to remove I think we can direct you in the correct direction.

Your steps worked perfect, however in order to get my layers to show up I had to change the DRC back to 2 layers, hit apply, then go back to 4 layers and hit apply and then all the layers showed up. Thanks for your respose!
