Probably depends on the tool used to do it, and the amount of content in the PDF file. A few seconds to a few minutes would be my guess.

RK, agreed, it would depend on what tool is being used and the amount of content in the original PDF, but also be aware of the PDF quality. Make sure the originator of the PDF's being used has set their PDF output settings to the highest res they can use. This helps pick up geometry, text and dims quicker and might speed up the process a little. SCB.
