Importing Solidworks files with configurations

I'm wondering how configurations in Solidworks part files are handled by Fusion during import?  In order to import a valid part it would have to have some idea of how to interpret which dimensions belong to which configurations.  So how is this done?  Is there a way to import all configurations as separate bodies or at least pick which configuration you want to import if it can only do one?  At the moment it seems to be just random pick as to which one you get.

I imagine that suppression status would be the most key thing, but I'm not really sure.

I noticed there seemed to be a lot of macro's available that will allow you to export a step file for each configuration.

https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/60604

You could do that and then upload all of the STEP files into the A360 dashboard. Would that be helpful?

Thanks,

Looking at the suppression status would make sense in the context of an assembly but just a part file wouldn't have any of that information.  The difference between configurations in a particular file might just be a single dimension change, so there isn't any suppression information to look at.  Now I guess SWX has the same issue when it opens a part file by itself; which configuration does it open?  I suppose (guess) it picks whichever on was saved last, which means Fusion would likely do that same thing.

Mostly I'm just curious how Fusion handles this.  I don't have any files with more than a few configs so saving to step and then importing to Fusion is not a big deal.  It would be a nice feature for Fusion though, to be able to pull in all configs from a native SWX file and save as separate bodies.  Even better would be for fusion to have its own version of configs and be able to convert from native SWX to that.  Seems like this might have even been suggested before, but I can't recall now.

The active configuration is read for the top file. For the non-top components, the configuration referenced by the parent is opened.

Can fusion import solidworks files with configurations? If not, when will fusion get the feature to do so?

Today, the active configuration is imported for the top file.

Do you mean to import a configuration which is not the active? Or import multiple configurations?

I was trying to import a file with multiple configurations. I have a gasket with various configurations which allow me to change the diameter of the gasket and the flange class of the gasket. Does fusion have a way to convert these to keep the configurations. Or do I have to go into solid works to save the right configuration I need and then upload to fusion? There are probably like 30 different configurations.

I also have a a few other files that use configuration. This would save a lot of time if there is a feature.

It would definitely be nice to have this functionality.  In the mean time though, you could make an assembly in Solidworks that contains one of each of the different part configurations.  That would at least get everything imported all at once, as opposed to uploading the same file 30 times.

Hey @kb9ydn

Firstly, thank you for brining this up. Its a timely topic for us.

We are currently looking at the best way we can support the import of configurations from other CAD solutions. This is something that we do want to support with Fusion 360's import toolset.

We need to do some work with Fusion's import options to allow you to select a configuration to import and I'm actively in discussions around how and when we can support this.

I will keep you posted on progress. Feel free to reach out to me if you would like to discuss further. harv.saund@autodesk.com

Thanks,

In my day job I use SW configurations fairly often so it would certainly be nice to have it in F360. I believe AD are working on it but whether it will have all (or maybe more/better) functionality than SW remains to be seen. However in the meantime you might be able to use the Sheeter add-in to give you some of SW's configurations functionality.

Hope this helps.

I've created a Windows application for creating custom thread files for Fusion. You'll find it here. Hope you find it useful.

Any updates on this? Really would like to see the ability to choose which configuration to open.

Thnx!

Hi @jordantylerzavala

I'm currently in the process of defining the overall Import and Export options for Fusion 360, which this falls into. I will update this thread when were a little further along.

I apologise for the delay, were working to make sure we get it right and this is just taking some time. Feel free to reach out to me If you want any more info.

Thanks,
