Cannot Launch Drawings

Hey you guys (and gals),

i cannot open or create drawings since the last big update. i get the 'fusion 360 cannot launch drawing' error. i reinstalled and rebooted several times, to no avail.

i also couldnt find the sheetmetal tool. did i somehow reinstall an elder version?

Please help me, i'm desperate. To me, the drawing feature is like a car's wind shield wiper. you only notice it's broken when it starts to rain... and i'm in the middle of a downpour!!!

thanks for your advice,

Greetings from Zurich (Switzerland)

Hi @ninolemann,

I am sorry to hear that! Can you please go to the Help menu and collect your Diagnostic Log files and post them here. I'd be curious to see what is happening. Also, when you uninstalled and reinstalled, did you follow our clean uninstall procedure here? Regarding sheetmetal - I think this is tied to the account, not the installation, so it should still be there if you are signing in with the same account. I'll double check that fact however.

Thanks,

Hello James,

Thanks for the quick reply!

i Just recreated the error, and attached the required data.

i'm not sure about that sheet metal. when i opened Fusion this morning, it announced that a big update was made. I checked whats new, and was excited to finally try the announced sheetmetal- functions (so far i've been abusing the Shell-command)

Since i can't find the Update summary in Fusions vast website, i can't recall if that was just a teaser or an actual new feature. if it is, i wasnt able to find it, and got suspicious that my reinstalled version must have been some sort of elder version.

what i'm really concerned about ist that Drawing feature. i need that on a daily basis. i spent all day trying to get it back to work. i saw in elder posts that a crude workaround was to delete a buggy folder. Said folder does no longer exist, so i cant work around that problem.

any help is appreciated

Hi @ninolemann,

Do you mind sending me an email at james.youmatz@autodesk.com? If possible, I'd like to remote into your system and try to grab some more diagnostics. Then we can report back our findings for other users.

Regarding sheetmetal, you need to sign up to get access which you can do here! Feel free to sign up for the preview and then you should have access!

Thanks,

Sooo, Update...

With the help of James Youmatz from autodesk, who tinkered around with my system, its running again, sort of...

seems like the culprit was my windows account name, which included a special character, an 'ö' (umlaut). we then created a new account, where the Software works as usual, no misbehaviour.

so i decided to rename my account and try again, only to fail again with opening drawings, after 2 times uninstalling (manually and automatically) and rebooting.

So i created again a new account (the new one from before being deleted) and again, it works well.

So there must be some dots from the 'ö' still be remaining in my main account, as it refuses to run Fusion properly.

long story short: new windows account, fusion works again. still, would be a drag to create a new account for every software update...

have a nice weekend y'all...

Hi ninolemann,

Yes, we have identified the problem and it is indeed due to the double-byte characters in the username (character with an umlaut or Japanese characters, etc.). While the workaround of creating a new username works, it is definitely not something that should ever be expected.  We'll get the fix for this out as soon as it's feasible.  Sorry for the inconvenience this is causing.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks you guys!
This works for me as a solution. Looking forward to use my regular account, though...

I also posted this question in the german forum. But there is way less traffic. Since germans use umlauts on a daily basis (motörhead, mötley crüe, blüe öyster cült, fahrvergnügen etc etc) they might be intrested in that workaround...

Thanks again, that was a great job!
Greetings from zürich (<- again! ü!)

is my user name the login name? i.e. the email address? if so then dose the @ symbol present a problem. Or is my user name first name, second name?

Salut solar-emc,
The problem was caused by the WINDOWS-account name. I dont know if that applies to other platforms. I had an 'ö' in my windows account name. That name and thus this letter was dragged into all kinds of file paths, and caused problems.

If you have a working FUSION account name, there should be no problem...
