using Design review version 14.0.0.177 to open .ipt or .iam file

the following error will appear

"Your current version does not support this type of document"

But the official website shows that this type of file is supported.

How can I open it?

Year-versions of those file types or the programs that created them are likely the issue, this old viewer you are using has not been updated in many years so you might just need to go seek a better viewer for those file types.

Hello @pendean ,

sorry for digging up this old thread, but the question remains as which Autodesk Desktop program to use for reviewing IAM (and IPT) files?

I am working as software dev and occasionally need to review (ro-mode) IAMs from our 3D CAD engineer.

I remember me using Navisworks years ago, but I cannot find the viewer for IAM files now.

What would you suggest? The Autodesk Online viewer is not an option as I would like to stay locally on my desktop viewing from our OneDrive file storage. This is because I am dealing with rather large assemblies and the files are scattered over the complete file system.

Thanks alot!

PS @Autodesk in general (if anyone interested): please keep your free file viewers up-to-date with your paid-for file generators. Thank you.

Greetings @johannes_f
Autodesk offers these viewers today, explore when you get a chance https://www.autodesk.com/viewers
Other software vendors offer others if you do not find what you need at Autodesk I am sure, try a Google Search.

there is a significant move to cloud based services at Autodesk and other software vendors (it is cheaper for them), so at some point you all need to resolve any conflicts you may have if your goal is to seek our free offerings only. Just be ready for that day, it is coming.

Good luck.

Hi @pendean ,

thanks for your suggestions.

We are going to have an Autodesk technician over at our company soon to help us find out the best solution. I am afraid his might be switching to Vault with all the negative side effects for us being 4 users (two adding content, two only reading)

What I meant is not actually have a fully free solution for everyone, but for me as a reading participant within a small company who is on Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD. I simply do not want to deal with a fully stacked CAD-program as I only occasionally read assemblies, take measurements, do some sectional cuttings etc.

If a file viewerwould actually be free for anyone to use this would help freelancers having to deal with multiple different CAD solutions. But they might have a totally different solution I guess...

Hello All,
I see that this topic has been marked as solved, however what is really the solution? When I'm trying to open the .iam file in Autodesk Design Review, it is not even possible since they are not supported but this software:

However in the viewers list on Autodesk website it states that it support 3D formats both .iam and .ipt:

So, is there any possibility to open these .iam and .ipt 3D files? I don't see any other software vendors that shared viewer for this type of files for free.

On the other hand, the online viewer accepts the file. However due to large size of file it keeps loading for hours without finishing the loading (tried on Mozilla and Chrome).

Thank you in advance for any tips and solutions.

Ok, basically I solved this issue by asking CAD designer to export the file to .nwd (using Autodesk Navisworks Manage) and then I opened it with Autodesk Navisworks Freedom 2024.
