Data Exchange for GIS data

Now that GIS data is becoming more accessible in Autodesk products it would be great to see GIS data being recognised in data exchange to that apps like Revit could extract the information they need.
Data exchange could possibly recognise GIS data types such as geodatabases, DEM, shapefiles.

Hi James,

Thank you for your comment!

Data Exchange is designed to share data - both elements and their properties - in a granular way. However, it also depends on what is supported by the host system, such as Revit.

Could you share which systems you’re looking to extract GIS data from, and how you’d like to use this data in Revit? What specific workflows would you expect to be supported?

You mentioned geodatabases—these typically require a GIS system to access and process the data. The role of Data Exchange in this context would be to share the resulting elements and properties, so they can be referenced in Revit. Is that aligned with what you're looking to achieve?

Currently, this workflow isn't supported yet, but we are actively working on expanding the Data Exchange schema to support a broader range of use cases. That’s why we’re particularly interested in the details of the workflows you have in mind—thanks for sharing!

Best,
Lejla

Hi Lejla,

Thanks for the reply. This could be worth a discussion with our Revit users to learn more of the specifics. From my understanding when they import GIS data into Revit it has to go through a series of conversions beforehand so that it is in the correct format, the revit user may only need something specific from that GIS Data (a pipe or a building for example).  They are looking for a way to access the GIS data (without having to go through multiple steps of conversion), identify the element or object and bring it through into the revit model. The revit users thought data exchange may be a way of doing this or it may require a separate tool completely (like an ArcGIS connector). It is something they keep asking for.
