Catalogs and Library prep for Revit Families with Donnia Tabor-Hanson

kitchen.PNG
Comment (19)

When should a family be a catalog family? How to you get a catalog out of a family? What files are needed to create a catalog? What clean up needs to be done prior to putting any family into a library? How do you test your family to see if it will work in your project.

You got questions? Donna Tabor-Hanson will be your librarian today passing out the answers.

This session will be also be supported by Revit Community Engagement Manager, Shaan Hurley, as part of Community Conversations - live, virtual events designed to allow you to gain expertise, connect with leaders and grow your community network. .

A recording will be posted here if you aren't able to join us.

Please help me design a cylindrical container -

donnia.tabor-hanson
Collaborator

There are a lot of cylindrical containers that came to mind. I just did two families real quick. One is an extrusion that makes a plain cylinder. Parameters are all instance. The other has all instance parameters but it has been created using a revolve. It also adds a "top" and "bottom" to the cylinder.

Dissect those and see if that helps you with your container problem.

Thanks y'all,

Another question from the session:

Johanna Esteban - EE Colombia: Is there a difference in file size if another visual style is used?

Apparently the visual style does not change the file size:

Here is a great idea from the comments:

Byron Gehrig:    I have typically named the default "Please Load Type Catalog"

I like it, Byron. Simple and to the point.

Now, about a question that came in the chat yesterday that I did not get.

Emily Larsen:     Can you set the named 3D view to an orientation that isn't home? Will the thumbnail orient to whatever the locked view shows?

I would definitely use a 3D view to set a preview. The cube can help with orientation. As you can see here, when you do a file save you can pick your view. I would not pick a view that had reference planes or dimensions all over it. That would not look clean. It is when you do a "SaveAs" then select "Options..." that you get a way to set your Thumbnail Preview to any named view.

Someone was gracious enough to put a comment in the after class survey that they wanted more on parameters. Since those are anonymous I will just throw this out. You can review what I have done on Reference Planes and Parameters.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/community-conversations/bones-and-ligaments-or-revit-reference-planes...

If that does not give you the answers you need just post a question in this chat. Learning does not stop just because the event time ended.

That should also cover where someone else suggested a look into Shared Parameters.

Someone want a future topic on:

  • More family formula discussions and entry level dynamo!

Well here is the topic planned for two months from now:

Favorite, Fabulous, Formulas for Families in Revit with Donnia Tabor-Hanson

What is your favorite formula used for? Turning things one or off as needed? Setting arrays? Selecting sizes? Preventing null values on extrusions? Adding or removing parts? How many “if” statements can you really put in a formula? Lots of formulas to play with in this session.

Don't forget to say your are Attending AND then RSVP to the event when it reaches the calendar for Community Conversations. #ADSKCommunity

I had a last minute change of plans and wasn't able to attend the session yesterday.  Sounds like it went well.  Was this recorded and going to be made available for us to view on-demand?

Yes it will. I think they send out a message to all that registered. That is why it is so important to both say your are Attending and to do the RSVP for each Community Conversation.

Someone suggested that there be a topic on Dynamo for Beginners. I will be the first to tell you that I am a novice myself. What I think you can try is based on how I learned LISP a long time ago. Find an example and build it yourself. I had some great starters that I use. I add our company parameters and then I also preset some parameters with some.

Here is where I learned about them:

In today's video we revisit my very first Dynamo script video on the channel; improvements to be made and we get it to work in Revit 2020 using the Orchid package instead. I hope you enjoy the session and learn something new! Feel free to comment any feedback/questions below, or follow my channel
Today's video shows how to take advantage of the Orchid custom package to set formulae fields in Revit family parameters. This video acts as an extension to my second video (Add Shared Parameters to families using Dynamo). I hope you enjoy the session and learn something new! Feel free to comment

Anyone looking for Dynamo for Beginners should check out the series of webinars presented by Jacob Small (Autodesk Support, and Dynamo Genius), Sol Amour (Dynamo Product Manager) and occasional guest presenters.  These started last September, under the old Architecture Community Virtual Meetup format, and have continued on in the current Community Conversation format.  Recordings for the series can be conveniently found in one place, the Dynamo Office Hours YouTube playlist.

Start with the 01 - Dynamo Data Types video.  They really do start from the very beginning.

There are a ton of other resources available, including the Dynamo Primer, Tutorials and a very helpful forum community.  You can find all that by going here:  https://dynamobim.org/.

Jacob Small rocks.  I do what I can.

I will add that the series will also be of interest to intermediate Dynamo users as well, particularly anyone who, like me, is mostly self-taught (with help from the forum when I swam out too far).  I learned something new in every webinar, and found them helpful in filling in the gaps of what I already knew as well as reminding me of things I had already forgotten.  Not to mention explaining why things I had blindly copied from other examples actually work.
