Forma Hackathon: Two Intense days of Ideas, Fun and Coding

Ever wondered what happens during a hackathon? Or why developers love the concept so much that they will travel to a different country and even sacrifice a good night sleep to be part of it?  If so – keep on reading!

Mid February we had the pleasure of welcoming members of our developer community to the very first Oslo Forma hackathon! The event brought together participants from Greece, Austria, Germany, Sweden, France and Norway and more with the goal of building something cool (and useful) using the open Forma API´s. Some participants had their ideas ready, while others found their dream projects during the kick-off pitching round in the morning of the first day. After forming teams and getting assigned a room and helper from the Forma team the hacking and ideation started. The participants continued to the late hours, before they got started again early the next day.

There was no lack of innovative projects and hacks that competed:

  • AI text prompt to place 3D buildings in Form
  • Forma Terrain (over API) in Autocad (!)
  • GML importer
  • Multi-story car park configurator
  • Generating native trees automatically from texture
  • Forma in augmented reality
  • Being able to have view to an object of interest
  • Running Rapid wind in Rhino over Forma API
    ... and more!

Participants maximized every available moment, mindful of the looming submission deadline. A presentation session (for those interested in watching the whole presentation you can check it out here) , open to other community members, added an exciting endpoint to their efforts! We had a special jury joining us, that had the difficult task of selecting three winners: Angie Mendez (CTO at architect ALAB), Marco Ciccone (architect and superuser at DARK) and our very own developer, Martin Hallén.

And, *drumroll*, the winners (in our opinion everyone were winners, but someone had to get those prizes!):

In sum, 9 countries, 15 companies, 10 hacks. And an infinite number of relationships formed! So if you are considering joining our next hackathon – this is your sign. We are looking forward to having you!

As if that wasn't exciting enough, let's boost your enthusiasm even further with some inspiring quotes from the participants!

"The code is incredibly readable, and the team has done an excellent job. The possibilities for what you can create are endless. You can truly build anything!"
Aristotelis, team PlexEarth

"Go for it and don't hesitate to reach out for help!"
Maksym, Team Buildrz

We thought this was a great way to learn how to use the extension system. And see if we could make a more seamless transition from our system to Forma. We would recommend everyone to attend.
Jarle, Placepoint

“Fun, cool people, lots of food. Not enough sleep. And not enough time. That pretty much sums it up”

Igor, Reope

PS: Would you like to connect with some of the hackers? Check out this post to learn more, and get in touch with them!

PSS: Sold? Sign up for a APS accelerator  in Munich, London or DevCon Boston to make your very own hack!
