Exploring AutoCAD's FINDUI Command and Its Uses

FINDUI

While at Autodesk University and manning the Answer Bar, my coworker and friend for many years, Lee Ambrosius were chatting and working with AutoCAD customers who had questions.  I think we were looking for a command in the Ribbon.   Lee typed something into the AutoCAD Command line and all the sudden I see this arrow showing the command in the Ribbon.  I told Lee this would be a great tip for people that know the command, but not where it is in the Ribbon.

Fast forward to today and I was chasing a question about the LAYISO command.  This was a command that was introduced in AutoCAD Release 14 as an Express Tool.   That reminded me of the FINDUI command, and it showed me where LAYISO is in the Ribbon.

If you know the command but do not know where to find it in the Ribbon, you can type FINDUI at the command line.

Now, you give it a try to find LAYISO.

Type FINDUI at the command line. You will be prompted to enter the macro-id of the button to search for.

Type LAYISO.

This will show you “Consider entered ID as context-id.

Click enter and you will see an animated arrow showing you the Ribbon icon for LAYISO!

Play around with this and try finding other commands in the Ribbon.  For example, I typed CIRCLE and clicked enter.  Notice you see Circle and the options like center radius.

If you are on the default Ribbon tab and search for something that is on a different tab, the arrow will change the tab and show you the item you searched for. For example, say you are searching for something in the Express Tools, and you have home tab set on the Ribbon. Type FINDUI, click enter and type SUPER Hatch.  Click enter and the tab will change to Express Tools and Super Hatch!

Hope you find this useful and a good tip to share with others in the office.

The function carries a bit of irony. If you know the command you can just type it, so you don't need to find it. But while instructing others I will start using this.
