AutoCAD locks up when opening a new file…. or maybe not.

System variables in AutoCAD can affect the way commands operate including changes to the user interface. Some system variables can be changed by uploading a drawing or importing a lisp file or plug-in. While others are stored in the Windows Registry which cannot be changed.

I was in my design using AutoCAD and needed to open an additional file to check a reference.

I selected Open and nothing happed? I thought I may have locked up, so I restarted.

I went back into AutoCAD and tried to open another file. Same result - nothing happened?

I then realized to look at the command line and sure enough the Open command was working but with no dialog box as shown in the image below.

(If you have dynamic input turned on you will see that same line in the model space window near your cursor).

This is a simple fix by changing the FILEDIA system variable from 0 to 1.

So remember - to always take a look at the command line. If you want to more about the command line please take a look at a post from @FrankMayfield on the command line in AutoCAD.

If you want to know more about System Variables in AutoCAD, be sure to vote for my class System Variables Explained! which I will submit a proposal to Autodesk University 2022 next week when the Call for proposals is open.

Hope to see everyone in person again in September!
