A Guide to Autodesk University 2024 San Diego

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, this guide will help you navigate the exciting, enriching, and sometimes overwhelming experience that is AU. As a veteran AU attendee, speaker, and mentor since 2006, I have attended AU in various locations: some great, some not. I have built up some wonderful experiences and made many connections that are now great friends, not just colleagues.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your time at this fantastic event.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Autodesk University spans several days and covers much ground, figuratively and literally. You’ll be moving between sessions, workshops, networking events, and exhibit halls, so comfortable footwear is necessary. During the day, opt for shoes that provide good support and are broken in. I tend to go for a good pair of walking shoes/trainers/sneakers. There are numerous brands out there. My go-to's are Nike, Under Armour, or Merrell—also, socks. Good sports socks (Under Armour, again, is my go-to) add additional support for those who may need it. You might also want to consider a comfortable pair of more formal shoes/boots for any evening events you attend. Also, make sure they are also well broken in. Trust me, your feet will thank you by the end of the week!

Stay Hydrated

With all the hustle and bustle, it's easy to forget to drink enough water. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and difficulty concentrating, so bring a reusable water bottle and fill it up frequently. Many conferences provide water stations throughout the venue, making it easy to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help you stay alert and energized. Being a token Brit, I am used to more moderate climates with humidity. Las Vegas (if you have been to AU there) is in the Nevada desert. I needed a humidifier in my room each night to keep my voice. San Diego will also be dry, as it is in Southern California. My biggest tip here is to find a Walgreens or CVS and buy a big case of bottled water (you can get them with 24 bottles). Top up your water bottle each morning before you leave your room, and avoid tap water. Also, consider a vitamin supplement, such as Berocca, that boosts all your vitamins. Many people equate to many germs, and COVID is still around, so it’s better to keep your vitamin levels up.

And another thing. Whilst you may be drinking coffee, tea, and various adult beverages (including soda/fizzy), these dehydrate you. Only good, old-fashioned water will do!

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

It might be tempting to stay out late networking or exploring the city, but remember that a good night’s sleep is essential for maintaining energy levels and focus. Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. This will help you make the most of your learning and networking opportunities. At AU2023, I had to adjust the lighting in the room due to the glare on the big presentation screen. This dimmed the lighting, and an attendee commented on this, stating that they could catch up on sleep in my class with the subdued lighting. Go figure, right? One, it’s not quite the attitude I hope to get from attendees to my class, but two, it highlights that people get tired and fatigued at AU. It’s not just the walking, attending classes, or the general workload that gets you either. Your senses are heightened in an AU environment, what with all the networking and social activity, too, so make sure you get your rest. It doesn’t need to be sleep, either. Just getting some quiet time is good, too. I often book slots in my schedule to chill out with a coffee somewhere or in my room to get a more relaxed environment.

Plan Your Schedule

Talking of schedule, AU2024 offers various classes, workshops, and events. Take some time before the conference to plan your schedule. Prioritize sessions that are most relevant to your interests and career goals. Many sessions fill up quickly, so register early. Don’t forget to leave some buffer time between sessions for networking or grabbing a quick snack.

The AU app is a great way to do this. I religiously use the app to book my time during AU, as it is immediate and always on my phone. You can also check for clashes with classes you want to attend, as there will ALWAYS be meetings and networking opportunities that crop up on the fly while you are at the AU event.

Network, Network, Network

One of the most significant benefits of attending AU2024 is connecting with like-minded professionals. Bring plenty of business cards and be prepared to introduce yourself to new people. Attend networking events, join group discussions, and don’t be afraid to talk with the person next to you in a session. My grandfather always used to say that “shy kids get no sweets (candy)”. Always ask if you can chat because building your professional network can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

Since my first AU, I have made a fantastic network of business contacts and colleagues and developed great friendships. These valuable friendships span oceans and continents; some are approaching their twentieth anniversary!

Remember, you are all at AU and connected because of a common thread: Autodesk. So, ask the question. It can be as simple as asking which Autodesk application they use as an icebreaker. That could lead to a very valuable business relationship in the future. Go on, try it!

Make the Most of Your Classes

Typically, your classes are the reason you are attending AU. Yes, I have other duties, such as being a speaker, speaker mentor, and Expert Elite, but to truly benefit from your classes at AU2024, come prepared. Review the course descriptions ahead of time and familiarize yourself with the topics. Download the PDF handouts before you leave for AU, and always bring a notebook or tablet to take notes. If you use a notebook, always have more than one pen! If you bring a tablet, there are some great apps, such as Notability and even MS Office, which can be used with a pencil or stylus combined with a tablet. Engage actively with the material by asking questions and participating in discussions. The more you put into your classes, the more you’ll get out of them. The AU speakers are world-class. Make sure to talk to them and rack their brains for the knowledge that you need!

Visit the Expo Hall

The Expo at AU2024 is a treasure trove of innovation and inspiration. You can see the latest technology and tools from Autodesk and its partners here. Take the time to explore the exhibits, talk to the representatives, and even get hands-on with some of the products. This is a great way to stay current with industry trends and discover new project solutions. It is also the location for food and drink breaks at AU, so get in quickly as the food quickly disappears!

This is a great place to network, so ensure you have your business cards. A quick takeaway for you: use the LinkedIn app. It has a great little tool that lets you connect wirelessly to another LinkedIn contact via your phone. No business card is needed; all their contact details are on LinkedIn.

Take Care of Yourself

AU is a crazy place. There is a lot to take in all at once. With so much going on, listening to your body and taking care of yourself is important. Take breaks when needed, eat nutritious meals, and find a quiet space if you need a moment to recharge. AU2024 is a marathon, not a sprint, so pacing yourself is key to a successful and enjoyable experience.

I travel from the UK to AU and always suffer from the dreaded jetlag. I always arrive a day or two earlier to decompress from the long travel stint to get there. I also ensure I sleep at the local time after I arrive. No daytime sleeping helps reset your body clock. Also, some exercise should be considered to get the blood pumping. If there’s a gym or a pool, consider an exercise session to help you sleep later.

Enjoy the Experience

Last but not least, make sure you have fun! AU2024 is not just about learning and networking; it’s also about enjoying the experience. Attend social events, explore the host city, and take in the unique atmosphere of the conference. This is a chance to be inspired and rejuvenated in your professional journey.

AU is an event to be enjoyed. Autodesk works hard to ensure you have an excellent event experience, so sign up for any social gatherings. Ensure you get the necessary downtime and enjoy the business and learning time!

Autodesk University 2024 is an incredible opportunity for growth, learning, and connection. By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to maximize your experience. Embrace the chance to learn new skills, meet new people, and explore the future of design and technology. Welcome to AU2024, and I hope you have an unforgettable time!

Safe travels and I hope to see you there!
