Superelevation for site grading

Superelevation for site grading

In site grading we often need to apply variable cross slopes along parking lot driving lanes, sidewalks, etc. Corridors work well for modeling these types of linear features. However to apply the desired cross slopes we have to resort to the superelevation editor which is too complex for such a simple scenario, especially for site designers who don't understand all the superelevation parameters. All we really need is a way to mark the start and end of the transition region and the cross slopes at the ends. Could this be done with a graphical interface verses the tabular interface such as we have with the superelevation editor?

Easiest way may be to target a featureline horizontally & vertically.

While that can be done, how do you determine the elevations for the featureline? You have to calculate them from the profile of the baseline and project at the desired slope. Then repeat every time you change the profile of the baseline. That whole process is automated by applying the cross slopes to the corridor.

Yep, it's a good idea and I voted.

Of course, you could put in a perpendicular featureline at every critical station to manually set the cross-fall. And manually update it every time it changes. But this idea is about making things better, not finding manual workarounds.

Keep in mind there can be vertical curves involved so simply grading between end points is not a solution.

I think this would work well with @sboon's suggestion for featureline sets which involves linking two (or more) featurelines together.

I didn't read all of the comments on Steve's idea but it is very similar to a concept I mentioned in the C3D forum some years ago where we could create grading sets and reuse them as needed. So a grading set would be for a curb and sidewalk, etc.

We already have the ability with gradings but they need to be more stable.
