Pasted surface interaction when the top surface has more than one boundary

Pasted surface interaction when the top surface has more than one boundary

When overlapping surfaces are pasted into a single surface the outer boundary of the topmost surface is used to clip the data from any underlying surfaces. Extra work must be done in order to include the data in underlying surfaces that fall within the inner boundaries of the topmost surface.

It would be nice if there was an option to select how the boundaries of the topmost surface will interact with selected underlying surfaces. For example, the outer boundary of the topmost surface would act as a HIDE boundary and the inner boundaries would act as SHOW boundaries for the underlying surface.

Excellent suggestion! I have to use the workaround to get those ares shown too.

Additional use case:

When pasting survey topo along streets onto GIS contour derived surfaces. To show the area inside city blocks where survey wasn't performed and void areas exists in survey topo definition, the workaround has to be implemented to add that area of the GIS topo back into the combined surface.

I agree with this idea. I admit that I wanted to post it.

Perhaps, it would be nice that we can specify if we want a vertical wall (during the paste between 2 surfaces will be created new triangles to make the wall between the surfaces).

We can type delta X for the offset of the boundary (wall width).

Great idea! I always have this problem in our projects.

I also agree wholeheartedly with this one.

Could have used it for the last 6 years or so..

If you have a surface with a hole, the hole will not be filled with the surface you are pasting into. It will leave a gap where the hole is like below.

Pond with hole in middlePond design with hole in the middle

When pasted together the hole is wiped out. Rather than the hole taking data from the existing surface pasted below the pond design.

Pasting together removes the first surface definition and creates and empty space

I know you can create a “hole surface” as a workaround and paste it in, but this iust sn’t as dynamic.

Bentley's civil products have VOID and HOLE as boundary options. VOID causes a blank hole with no triangles inside. HOLE allows the underlying terrain to be included.

Sure would like to see this get implemented eventually. Particularly @joantopo's suggestion of adding the ability to specify a wall condition. Example: Start with a surface (Surf-1) composed of the finished grade of a concrete slab and its grading to existing ground. Then, create a surface (Surf-2) representing subgrade of the concrete slab [no grading, just the slab FG lowered by a certain depth - e.g. 1' (6" slab and 6" gravel base)]. Finally, create a third surface (Surf-3) into which you paste Surf-1 and then Surf-2. At the basic level, this Surf-3 represents the in-situ material cut/fill analysis (as opposed to the gravel/stone used for the subbase, the concrete used for the base, or other imported engineered fill). When Surf-2 is pasted in, I want to be able to specify a near-vertical condition (like a "Wall"-type breakline) as opposed to the extents of the inside (and in this case, lower) surface acting as standard breaklines.

Hi team,

This was selected as an Accepted Idea back in Feb 2016. Surfaces still seem to have the same behaviour. Any ideas when this might actaully make it into the program?

Cheers, Brad.

This one is still on our list. We have a batch of grading and surface modeling enhancements we have under consideration, and this one is high on that list.

This idea is under consideration for a future version of Civil 3D. Please visit the Autodesk Civil Infrastructure Product Roadmap for details and to vote for this idea to indicate its importance relative to other items that are under consideration.

What is the status on this, has the idea been implemented in the latest release?

Hi @tblumensteinLLFTQ  -- This one is still on our roadmap. I don't have an ETA for it but we will be researching feature issues and performance this year.
